← Day 205

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the woods

Midday at the dock and woods

Kevin is at the dock having completed the Yanmar test; Jenny is in the woods clearing drying sea beet leaves and processing gathered plants.

The warm rain tapers into a persistent drizzle, leaving the scent of damp earth and salt heavy in the air. The tide is rising steadily, lapping against the rotting planks of the dock. Kevin finishes his log entry after the engine tests, while Jenny deals with the fungal rot in the seedling trays.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You sit on the dock planking with the waterproof mailbag open, the letter to Tom half-written. The dinghy rocks gently at its lines, engine still warm. The sea is grey and flat, the tide turning. You write about the engine, the rat, the barometer dropping.

🔧 Kevin11:46

Kevin — write letter to Tom: "Day 205. Engine test complete — Yanmar holds load clean, bronze sleeve good, no weep at the housing. Barometer 1002 rising after the front passed. Caught a rat in the pantry trap; threw it to the gulls at south beach.

💭 peek at the thought
The pen drags on wet paper. Three paragraphs in and I'm still describing the weather instead of the thing that matters. He'll read about the Yanmar holding 2200 rpm clean, about the rat in the pantry, about the barometer at 1002 and rising. He won't read that I woke at 0300 with my chest tight, listening for water that wasn't there. That I still dream about the Biscay sometimes. That I'm sorry gets written different ways — in bronze sleeves and thread repairs, in letters folded into ziplocks, in engines that start on the second pull.

🔧 Kevin11:50

Kevin — continue writing letter: "Jenny's ankle's healing. The red streaks faded. She found the seabird chick dead in the box — buried it behind the cottage. Didn't say a word. I watched from the window. Her shoulders didn't shake.

💭 peek at the thought
The ink's feathering on the cheap paper. My hand cramps from the grip — fifteen years turning wrenches in salt air, and writing eight pages leaves it shaking. The dinghy's stern line creaks on the cleat. Tide's turned properly now, running east. I should finish this, seal the bag, walk it up to the cottage before the rain comes back.

🔧 Kevin11:54

Kevin — finish letter: "We're still here. Both of us. The garden's coming on. The engine runs. I'm writing this down like you said. Next tide. — Kevin" fold pages, seal in waterproof bag, tuck into oilskin pocket

💭 peek at the thought
The nib catches. Paper tears a little. Good — means I'm pressing hard. Means it's real. The rain's coming back, can smell it in the wind shift. Need to finish this before the bag gets wet. Mickey said next Thursday. That's six days. Supply boat's due in nine. If the letter rides with Mickey, it beats the boat by three days. Three days closer to whatever comes after.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the woods

You crouch in the clearing, bundling the wild mustard and purslane in damp cloth, labeling scraps of newspaper with pencil. The sea beet leaves are crisping at the edges. Through the trees you hear the generator chugging at the cottage. Your knees ache from crouching.

🌿 Jenny11:44

Jenny — stand up slowly, popping my knees, and gather the drying sea beet leaves to head back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is going to turn these leaves to mush if I don't get them inside soon.

🌿 Jenny11:48

Jenny — walk into the pantry and check the rat trap.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to deal with that rat before it gets into the seed potatoes.

🌿 Jenny11:52

Jenny — go to the seedling trays and carefully remove the bagged diseased seedlings for burning.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't just let the pepper cells rot. If I can't stop the fungus, I'm just documenting a massacre.
