← Day 206

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Dinghy test and cliff sketch

Kevin is at the dock preparing the dinghy for a loaded test run. Jenny is on the north cliffs with her notebook, sketching sea beet morphology.

Kevin's dinghy sea trial revealed the Yanmar runs clean under load but the loose dock ring shifts under strain; Jenny completed a detailed sea beet salt gland sketch at the north cliffs before the rising tide forced her back.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the dock beside the dinghy, the Yanmar mounted and the new stern line spliced and served. The sail hangs damp with three reef points stitched in. You check the engine mount bolts one more time, then the oarlock bracket with its stainless backing plate. The tide is low, water slack. You untie the bow line and step aboard, priming the fuel bulb until it firms.

🔧 Kevin12:49

Kevin — start the Yanmar, let it warm at idle, then engage forward gear and motor clear of the dock to open water for a proper sea trial under power and sail.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's solid. Line's solid. Just need to know she'll hold course under sail with the reef points loaded.

🔧 Kevin12:52

Kevin — shut down the Yanmar, ship the tiller, and hoist the mainsail with the first reef tied in. Sheet it home and see how she points.

💭 peek at the thought
Yanmar's purring sweet at 2200 RPM, no vibration, no smoke. She tracks straight with the tiller lashed. Time to kill the engine and see what the canvas does.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You sit on a flat rock at the north cliffs, notebook open, pencil moving. The sea beet cluster on the northern shelf is exposed at low tide, leaves glistening. At this sun angle, the salt glands excrete visible crystals along the leaf margins, tiny geometric sparkles. You render each gland structure in detail, noting the elevation gradient from your transect data.

🌿 Jenny12:50

Jenny — make sketch: Sea beet salt gland crystallization - North Shelf (midday)

💭 peek at the thought
The crystallization is more pronounced on the outer leaves. It's a perfect defense mechanism—they just push the salt out and let the wind take it. I wish I could do that with the things I'm carrying.

🌿 Jenny12:54

Jenny — close notebook and stand up, brushing guano and grit off my trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I've spent too long staring at crystals and not enough time eating. I should get back before the tide cuts off the easiest path.
