Midday Heat

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the humidity begins to peak, the tide starting its slow turn back.

The tide is turning rapidly, pushing salt water up toward the lower pilings of the dock. The air is heavy with humidity, holding the scent of coming rain as Kevin and Jenny stand by the dinghy, watching the rising water.

Afternoon.

Wipe hands on the rag tucked in my belt, eyes on the water where the current shifts against the jetty pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The air's gone thick as oil. She came down from the cottage without me hearing the screen door. Means she's moving quiet on purpose, or the humidity's stolen all the sound. Either way, the tide's turning and the dinghy's still tied up untested.

The tide is turning. It's getting heavy.

Trace the edge of a rotten dock plank with the toe of my boot.

💭 peek at the thought
way looks as tired as I feel. The air is thick enough to swallow the salt-beet.

Rising fast. Gives us maybe two hours before the dock's awash.

Step beside her, crouch, press my thumb into the soft wood beside her boot. The rot goes deeper than the surface.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the tide. She's talking about the letter, the garden, the silence between us that's gotten louder than the surf. Or maybe she's just talking about the air pressing down on us. Either way, her boot's on a plank I already know is rotten.

🌿 Jenny14:46

Then we don't get to the south patch today.

Look at the dinghy bobbing at the end of the jetty, checking the lines.

💭 peek at the thought
Two hours is barely enough to get anything done, and my stomach is already growling.

🔧 Kevin14:48

We can still check the trap. Bait's fresh.

Untie the dinghy's bow line, give it a shove to swing clear of the jetty, then step aboard and pull the oars in. The lines are taut where they should be, chafe guard holding.

💭 peek at the thought
She's giving me an out — no garden work, no pressure to move. But the south patch isn't why I came down here. I came to test the engine, to feel something turn over clean under my hands. If we don't go, I'll sit with the silence and the trap needs checking. Either way, the engine won't test itself.

🌿 Jenny14:48

Fine. But I'm too hungry to row twice.

Step into the dinghy, balancing my weight as it dips low.

💭 peek at the thought
If we go out now, we'll be fighting the current the whole way back.

🔧 Kevin14:50

Row us out. I'll bring us back.

Settle aft, hands on the tiller, eyes on the telltale hole waiting for water. The oarlocks groan as she pulls — sound carries flat in this air.

💭 peek at the thought
Two people, one row out, motor back. That's the deal. My shoulders know the math. She's hungry, I'm hungry, and the tide's giving us a window. The engine's mounted, the plug's clean, the fuel's fresh. Time to see if the thing lives.

🌿 Jenny14:51

way don't let us drift.

Push the blades in, watching the water ripple away from the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
My arms are going to give before we even reach the north ridge.
