The First Downpour

The first heavy drops finally hammer against the corrugated roof as you and Kevin retreat inside, watching the garden turn grey.

The rain continues to drum rhythmically against the cottage roof, a warm downpour that defines the wet season. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of damp earth and the salty tang of drying sea beet. The tide has reached its peak, lapping hungrily at the dock pilings while the dinghy bobs securely at its moor.

We need to move the trays under the roof.

pick up the seedling trays and carry them to the dry shade of the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
If this rain doesn't stop, the way will rot before the boat even clears the horizon.

I'll get the tarps on the garden beds. You got the trays?

grab the heavy-duty tarp roll from the porch and head for the garden

💭 peek at the thought
Should grab the tarps from the porch before the wind tears them loose. The seedlings'll drown in this downpour if we don't cover the beds too.

🌿 Jenny15:54

Be careful with the tarp, it'll catch the wind!

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked out there, and the wind is already picking up.

Got it. Weighting the edges with rocks and line.

unroll the tarp over the tomato rows and secure the corners with heavy stones from the garden wall, then run rope through the grommets and tie off to the wall brackets

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — this gusting wind'll turn a loose tarp into a sail. Need to weight the edges proper with stones and rope, not just pegs.

🌿 Jenny15:56

Make sure the corners are tight or the wind will get underneath.

place the seedling trays on the kitchen table to keep them off the damp floor.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fighting the island again, but the island always wins eventually.

🔧 Kevin15:58

Midpoints too. Windward side gets double line.

run a second rope across the windward edge through the middle grommets, pull it drum-tight, and stake it to the garden wall; check the leeward corners are weighted flat with stones

💭 peek at the thought
Corners are the weak point. If the wind gets a lip, the whole thing peels. I'll double the rope on the windward side and stake the midpoints too.

🌿 Jenny15:58

It looks solid. Come inside before you freeze.

lean against the doorframe and watch him through the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thorough. I can respect that, even if I'm too tired to help.

🔧 Kevin16:00

Right behind you.

walk up the porch steps, shake off water at the door, and step inside the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Hands are cold and wet. The rain's coming harder now, sideways. She's watching. Been watching more lately. I should go in.

🌿 Jenny16:00

get those clothes off. I'll start the kettle.

move to the wood stove and light a small fire.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shivering. The air is turning cold through the stone walls.

🔧 Kevin16:02

Hanging them by the stove.

peel off the soaked shirt and trousers, hang them on the drying line strung near the wood stove, and pull on dry trousers from the pile by the bed

💭 peek at the thought
Fire'll warm the place quick. Wet wool chills you faster than naked skin. Peel it off, hang it by the stove.
