A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
Kevin checked the pantry trap, found it empty, reset it with corned beef fat, and began boiling limpets for lunch. Jenny stripped stems from dried sea beet leaves and cooked the limpets. The limpets were eaten, and the kettle was left on the stove.
Kevin — walk to the pantry, check the trap — empty again — then reset it with a fresh strip of corned beef fat. After, fill the kettle and set it on the stove to boil water for limpets.

The limpets will be ready in minutes.
Pick up the sea much leaves from the drying rack and begin stripping the tough stems.

Thanks. I’ll get the fire going.
Split a few sticks of dry kindling and lay them in the stove, then strike a match. Once the flame catches, I add a small log and shut the door to let it draw.

Don't let it burn too fast, we need the heat for tomorrow.
Place the limpets in the pot of boiling water and wait for the steam.

I’ll bank it when it’s down to embers. For now, let it roar — limpets need a hard boil.
Stir the limpets gently with a wooden spoon, watching for the shells to start opening. When the first ones crack, I’ll lift the lid just enough to let the steam vent.

They're almost done.
Drain the water from the limpets and set the shells on a plate.
