The Afternoon Squall

The rain intensifies as the afternoon progresses, drumming loudly against the roof. You and Jenny meet inside, the smell of damp earth and woodsmoke filling the small space.

Kevin spent the afternoon working on the dinghy's fuel system and installing a water separator. Jenny attempted to test the southern garden pH but found the soil too waterlogged for an accurate reading. They prepare for dinner together.

🌿 Jenny16:40

The south patch is a swamp. I couldn't get a clean reading.

Sets the muddy notebook on the kitchen table and wipes grit from her hands on her apron.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is going to be all over the place with this; the runoff is just leaching the nutrients away.

🔧 Kevin16:40

Kettle's on if you want tea. I'll look at the radio aerial — insulator's still cracked from the last blow.

walk to the radio shelf and inspect the shortwave aerial connection

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's not letting up. Fuel line can wait for a dry spell. She's frustrated — soil work in this muck is pointless. Might as well use the time for something under roof.

🌿 Jenny16:42

Don't touch the wiring, the salt makes it brittle.

Picks up the handful of limpets and heads for the wood stove, her stomach twisting with hunger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing things that work while the garden is literally drowning under his feet.

🔧 Kevin16:42

Not the wiring. The coax entry at the mast. Shield continuity failed last month.

climb onto the porch roof to inspect the coax cable where it enters the radio mast

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the salt. Insulation crumbles if you look at it wrong. Let her cook — she's hungry and the limpets won't take long. I'll check the coax instead, see if the shield's still holding where it enters the mast.

🌿 Jenny16:44

Just be careful. The shingles are slick.

Starts to de-shell the limpets with a small paring knife, movements precise and sharp.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out on that roof, he's going to slip and break a wrist.

🔧 Kevin16:44

I've got boots with grip. Just the entry point — won't be a minute.

carefully examine the coax cable where it passes through the mast bracket, checking for chafe and shield damage

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. These shingles hold water like a sponge. One wrong step and I'm sliding off into the garden wall. But the coax has been flapping in every gale since the insulator cracked — chafing against the mast bracket. If the shield's frayed through, we're blind until the supply boat brings more. Worth the risk.

🌿 Jenny16:46

The barometer is dropping. Don't stay up there.

Places the limpets in the cast iron skillet, waiting for the oil to shimmer.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get wet for a radio check that barely works anyway.

🔧 Kevin16:46

Shield's clean at the bracket. Just salt crust. I'm coming down.

descend carefully from the porch roof and step back into the kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's been falling since dawn. She reads it better than I do — doesn't need the needle to tell her the weight in the air. Coax looks intact at the bracket, just surface salt. The real wear's higher up where it flexes. But she's right: not today. Coming down.

🌿 Jenny16:48

Use a towel. You're dripping everywhere.

Hands him a dry cloth, eyes fixed on the skillet as the steam rises.

💭 peek at the thought
He's soaked to the bone. The island is going to win today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:48

Thanks.

take the towel and wipe my face and hands, then pull out the chair at the kitchen table

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's soaked through the shoulders. She doesn't look up — just holds the towel out like it's a reflex, same as passing a wrench in the engine room. The limpets smell good. Salt and fat and smoke. My stomach turns over.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:50

The garden is a mess. I couldn't get a reading.

Drops the limpets into the pan, the sizzle filling the small room.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks as tired as I feel, but the hunger is louder than the silence.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:50

Soil's too wet. pH won't read true anyway. Eat first.

sit at the table and watch the skillet, letting the heat dry my shirt

💭 peek at the thought
She said that already. Twice now. Not the garden — her. The reading's just the excuse. Rain's been three days straight. She's been at the shrine yesterday, the day before. Tom's letter in her pocket. She won't say it. I won't ask. The limpets pop in the fat.
