Morning Prep and Tide

Kevin and Jenny stand by the dinghy while the heavy air hangs over the water. Jenny sorts the collected limpets on the iron skillet as Kevin checks the tension on the new spring lines.

Kevin and Jenny prepared breakfast in the kitchen while the heavy morning air hung still. They boiled water with dried mint and fried the freshly collected limpets in corned beef fat until the edges were golden brown.

🔧 Kevin16:12

Engine's warm if you want coffee after.

Check the forward spring line cleat one more time, then walk to the cottage porch for the coffee tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Spring lines hold clean. She's quiet again — limpets sorted, skillet ready. Good. Let the work speak.

🌿 Jenny16:14

I'll start the limpets now.

Jenny wipes the salt-crust from the edge of the limpets with her thumb and begins de-shell them.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the coffee will fix the silence, but the hunger is still in my stomach.

🔧 Kevin16:14

I'll get the water boiling on the back burner. You want any of that mint in there?

Step into the cottage, lift the lid off the water bucket, pour fresh into the skillet, set it on the wood stove, then break off a sprig of drying mint and toss it on the counter near her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving steady — thumb on the shell, de-shelling limpets like she's done it a hundred times. No need to hover.

🌿 Jenny16:16

yeah, just a bit.

Jenny pries the limpets from their shells with a small knife and sets the meat in a neat pile on the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
The mint will hide the smell of the salt and the damp wood.

🔧 Kevin16:17

Kevin — crumble a pinch of the dried mint into the heating water, then lean against the doorframe watching the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
Neat pile. She works clean. The mint's dry but it'll steep.

🌿 Jenny16:18

Don't let the water boil over again.

Jenny drops the limpets into the cold skillet and waits for the fat to render.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always watching like he's waiting for me to trip.

🔧 Kevin16:18

Heat's low. It'll steep, not boil.

Turn the stove damper down a notch, then pull the tin mugs from the shelf and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Cold skillet, cold limpets. She's teaching me patience or she's tired. Either way, the water's rising.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:20

It's better that way.

Jenny stirs the limpets in the pan, listening to the faint sizzle in the quiet kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
Steeping is better for the mint anyway. Boiling is aggressive.

🔧 Kevin16:20

Kevin — lift the kettle off the stove, pour the mint water slow into the two mugs, set the kettle back cold-side.

💭 peek at the thought
Sizzle's thin — fat's not hot enough yet. She knows. She's waiting me out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:22

Water's almost ready.

Jenny flips the limpets with a spatula, watching the edges turn golden brown.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the mint is starting to fight the salt-air.
