Morning Tide and the Floating Crate

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock planks as the light breeze picks up. They watch a heavy wooden crate thud against the salt pilings in the rising tide.

Kevin used the boat hook to free the heavy waterlogged crate wedged against the dock pilings as the tide began to turn. Jenny checked the mooring ring's stability but found it remained loose, requiring urgent reinforcement before the supply boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin17:08

That crate's caught on the pilings. I'll pull it clear before it works loose and takes a plank with it.

walk to the end of the dock, grab the boat hook, and snag the crate's edge to pull it away from the pilings and into open water where it can float free.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate's wedged in the pilings — same one I saw yesterday. If it shifts, it could strain the dock further. Need to secure it before the tide lifts it clear.

🌿 Jenny17:10

Careful, the wood is soft as mush down there.

Step back from the dock edge and watch the crate drift.

💭 peek at the thought
If he pulls the wood too hard, that whole section will snap and we don't have the replacement planks yet.

🔧 Kevin17:10

Aye. Standing on the sound planks.

brace feet on the inner dock planks, extend the boat hook fully, hook the crate's rope handle, and pull steadily — letting the tide do the work of swinging it clear of the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the seaward stringers are gone. The crate's heavy, waterlogged. If I lean too far the planks could go. Use the boat hook, keep weight back.

🌿 Jenny17:12

It's clear. Don't let it drift into the rocks.

Open the notebook and sketch the tide level against the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
It's free, but the tide is just going to bring it back in.

🔧 Kevin17:13

It's clear. Drifting out on the ebb.

lean the boat hook against the dock post, wipe salt spray off hands, and walk back toward the cottage alongside Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's clear of the pilings now, drifting on the ebb. She's logging the tide mark — good. The spring tides are pushing higher each week. Need to check the mooring ring bolts again before the supply boat comes.

🌿 Jenny17:14

I can't think straight. I'm going to get some food.

Walk toward the cottage kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving. If I don't eat something soon, I'm going to be useless for the rest of the morning.

🔧 Kevin17:14

There's cold corned beef and limpets from lunch. I'll check the mooring ring.

walk to the seaward end of the dock, crouch by the mooring ring, and test each bolt with the wrench — feeling for movement in the mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not sleeping well. Hasn't for weeks. The tide log's her anchor. I'll check the ring bolts while she eats — supply boat's due in three days and the seaward bolts still turn in their holes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:16

The ring is loose. We need to reinforce it before the boat comes in.

Reach into the pantry for the tin of beef.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring pulls out, the dinghy is lost when the next storm hits.
