The Afternoon Heat

Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden wall as the sun begins to bake the heavy air.

Kevin inspected the old dock planks behind the shed and found several with sound cores suitable for the mooring ring repair. Jenny checked the pH levels in the garden, noting that the acidity in the untreated beds is dropping as expected.

Canopy's toast. Fabric crumbles like dry leaves. Seams rotted through. Not worth a stitch.

Wipe hands on trousers, walk to the dock to inspect the mooring ring mortise up close.

💭 peek at the thought
The liferaft's a write-off. Knew it before I opened the canister, but hands had to learn what eyes already saw. Mooring ring's the real job now — supply boat's due in two days and that ring shifts under load. Bronze bolt's seated but the mortise is chewed out. Needs epoxy and a sleeve, or a longer bolt through-bolted to the stringer.

The salt eats everything eventually, Kevin. Even the bronze.

pull a pencil from my ear and sketch the jagged way the salt crystals have encrusted the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at what's broken, never what's still holding.

🔧 Kevin18:23

Bronze bolt's fine. Stone's the problem. Mortise is chewed out. Need to epoxy a sleeve deeper or through-bolt to the stringer.

Crouch at the dock ring, probe the mortise with a screwdriver to gauge depth of rot.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt gets into the grain of everything — bronze, stone, skin. But the bolt's not the problem. The mortise is. Stone's softened where the ring's worked loose for years. Need to clean it out, epoxy a stainless sleeve in deeper, or drill through to the stringer and bolt it proper. Two days before the boat. Time's thin.

🌿 Jenny18:23

We don't have enough epoxy for a full sleeve, and the artworker looks soft at the edges.

trace the grain line with my fingernail, feeling the give in where the wood meets the salt.

💭 peek at the thought
If we through-bolt, the vibration from the waymar will shake the whole thing apart anyway.

🔧 Kevin18:24

Stringer's soft. Through-bolt won't bite. Need to sister new timber alongside, bolt through to sound wood. Crate planks might have one.

Stand, walk to the crate on the porch, pry it open with the crowbar to check plank quality.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right on both counts. Epoxy tub's nearly empty — just thick residue. And the stringer's soft where salt's wicked up the end grain. Through-bolt won't hold in mush. Need to sister a new timber alongside, bolt through both into sound wood. Or drive a longer bolt at an angle to catch solid core. Either way needs wood we don't have much of. The crate from the supply boat had some planks. Might be one sound enough.

🌿 Jenny18:24

That wood is too thin, Kevin. It'll split the first time the tide pulls.

walk to the garden wall and kick a clump of weeds, staring at the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If he uses the crate planks, we won't have anywhere to store the dry fuel.

🔧 Kevin18:26

The inner dock planks I pulled last month. Protected from sun. Might have sound cores.

Walk to the weed pile behind the shed, kick through debris to find the old dock planks, test each with the screwdriver.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right again. Crate planks are thin, kiln-dried, not meant for structural load. They'd split under the first real strain. Need something with density, salt-resistant. Greenheart or ekki if we had it. We don't. The old dock planks I pulled last month — some were rot clear through, but the inner ones, protected from sun and air? A few might have sound cores. Buried in the weed pile behind the shed.

🌿 Jenny18:26

If they aren't rotted through the core, we can try. But I need to check the soil pH first.

walk into the way to grab the pH test kit from the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
If those planks are actually dry, I might be able to fix the waymar later.
