Evening at the ridge stones
They climb the ridge path together as the light thins, the barometer at 1017 and still falling. The stone ring sits silent on the windward edge, carved names worn smooth. A tin of beans rests in the center — new since their last visit. They stand side by side in the gathering dusk, the sea loud below.
Kevin and Jenny stood at the old shrine examining a rusted metal tin marked 'E' found among the standing stones. Jenny wiped the tin clean but found only a manufacturer's mark, no name or date. They left the tin where they found it as darkness fell and the wind gusted through the palms.
Who the hell puts a tin of beans on a grave?
Walk toward the center of the stone ring and peer down at the tin.

Could be anyone. Fishermen. The supply boat crew. Tom's lot used to leave tobacco.
Stand shoulder to shoulder with Jenny at the ring's edge, hands in pockets against the wind, looking down at the tin.

Tobacco is a tribute. Beans are a grocery list.
Reach down and pick up the tin, turning it over to check the label.

Label facing?
Glance at the tin in her hand, then scan the carved names on the nearest stones, worn nearly flat.

We'll see.
Wipe the grit off the tin with my thumb and look for a name or a date.

Anything stamped on the bottom?
Step closer, squint at the tin in her hand, the light fading fast now.

Nothing. Just the manufacturer's mark.
Hold the tin tight in my palm, feeling the cold metal, and look back at the worn names on the stones.

Leave it or take it?
Turn my collar up against the gust, eyes on the cliffs where the light's almost gone.
