← Day 216

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday Tide Check

Kevin is at the dock while Jenny remains in the garden.

Kevin spent the midday at the dock working on the bronze sleeves for the Yanmar lower unit, carefully measuring the bore. Jenny tended to the heirloom garden, identifying the damping-off fungus on the pepper and lettuce seedlings and checking the soil.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You inspect the landward mooring ring to see if the rising tide stressed the bolts.

🔧 Kevin22:22

Kevin — walk to the landward end of the dock, crouch by the mooring ring set in the timber mortise, and shove against it with a boot to test for play. Check the bolt heads and the surrounding wood for fresh crushing or rust streaks.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's coming up. The ring held last time but the mortise has been working loose all month. Need to see if the bolts moved before the supply boat tries to tie up.

🔧 Kevin22:26

Kevin — pull the nail puller from my belt and lever the proud bolt the rest of the way out. Examine the threads and the hole. Scrape wet sawdust from the mortise to see how deep the rot goes.

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's shifted. Not much, but the mortise is chewed out wider than last week. One bolt head's buried — wood crushed around it. The other's proud by a finger's width. If the supply boat surges against it in a swell, it'll pull clean.

🔧 Kevin22:30

Kevin — fetch the sound dock plank offcuts, the 10mm bronze bolt, washers, nyloc nut, and the drill from the workshop. Cut a 400mm sister block, drill the through-hole, and bolt it through the existing dock frame beside the chewed mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
Mortise is rotted halfway through the timber. The bolt holes are ovalled out. Can't just re-bolt — nothing left to bite. Need to sister a new hardwood block through the dock frame and through-bolt the ring to that. Got the offcuts from the plank replacement. Got the bronze bolt. Got the drill. Tide's still rising — about an hour before this end's underwater.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You check the acidity levels in the beds, noting how the salt air affects the earth.

🌿 Jenny22:20

Jenny — kneel in the damp dirt, scraping a small sample from the lime bed to test the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is too low. If I don't add lime now, those potatoes will just rot before they even sprout.

🌿 Jenny22:24

Jenny — stand up slowly, rubbing damp knees, and walk over to the seed potato crate.

💭 peek at the thought
6.7. Acceptable, but barely. The salt is winning the war of attrition out here.

🌿 Jenny22:28

Jenny — lift the wooden crate and set it on the edge of the lime bed.

💭 peek at the thought
These potatoes are heavy. If I don't get them in, they'll just be sitting in the dark rotting.
