The Evening Meal

They eat the boiled limpets in silence, the flickering light of the stove casting long shadows against the walls. Outside, the tide begins to turn, the water lapping softly against the dock pilings.

The south-east wind lashes against the cottage walls, bringing a fine mist of spray from the reef. Inside, the air is heavy with the smell of drying herbs and salt air. The tide is rising steadily, pushing against the stone steps outside.

Nothing. I eat, then push the bowl away.

wipe hands on trousers, stand, and walk to the radio shelf to check the shortwave — just to see if the needle moves.

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets taste of the sea and of work — simple, necessary. The dock’s gone, but the tide still turns. I should’ve fixed it sooner. Now it’s just memory and mudline.

The radio won't tell you anything about the tide, Kevin. It's already turning.

Jenny picks up the pH test strips and compares the faint yellow hue to the chart in her notebook, sighing as her stiff knees protest the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a signal that isn't coming, while the soil in the lime beds is too acidic for the potatoes to stand a chance before the next boat.

Hmph.

lean against the doorframe, watching her match colour to chart, the stove light catching the grey in her hair.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tide doesn't need a radio. Neither does the dock.

🌿 Jenny22:54

It's 5.8. Too low. I'll need more lime than I thought.

Jenny circles the number in the soil pH log with a sharp pencil, the lead digging slightly into the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He stands there watching me like I'm a specimen under a glass instead of a person trying to keep us alive.
