← Day 219

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Afternoon Work Continues

Kevin is at the dock working on the dinghy, while Jenny is back at the cliffs tending to the garden.

Kevin attempts to feed the seabird chick at the dock while the heat lingers under the clouds. Jenny spends the afternoon checking the seedlings for signs of stress, noting the air pressure begins to shift upward.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You start tightening the forward spring line, using the new rope. You then adjust the sail reef points to reduce strain on the sail.

🔧 Kevin01:26

Kevin — tighten the forward spring line with the new half-inch three-strand, cleat it off hard on the dock ring. Then step back aboard the dinghy and re-tension the three reef points on the mainsail, taking up the slack in the luff cringles and sec

💭 peek at the thought
The engine test went clean — vibration's just the prop bite in shallow water, nothing structural. Forward spring needs to hold through the swell before the supply boat tries to come alongside. Reef points are loose from the test run; snugging them now saves stitching later.

🔧 Kevin01:30

Kevin — walk back up the path from the dock toward the cottage, hands in pockets, scanning the garden wall for fresh collapse.

💭 peek at the thought
Lines hold. Sail's quiet. The dock ring shifted maybe a millimetre under the last pull — mortar's tired. Supply boat's crane will test it harder than tide ever does. Should sister the ring bolts with epoxy and a backing plate before day five. Wood stove's cold; water's hot in the tank from morning sun. Could make tea, wait for Jenny at the cliffs. Letter to Tom sits on the table, one sentence deep. Haven't decided if the second goes in the envelope or the fire.

🔧 Kevin01:34

Kevin — step onto the porch, wipe boots on the mat, and push the door open.

💭 peek at the thought
Garden wall's holding — two new courses bedded solid, lime mortar breathing. Tomato stakes still vertical. Pepper and lettuce trays burned clean on the south beach; ash scattering in the wind. No new damping-off on the replacements. Jenny's basil at true leaf, untouched by fungus. She knows this ground better than I do. Cottage door's ajar. Smell of woodsmoke and boiled limpet broth. She's back from the cliffs.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You check the pepper seedlings for dampness, pulling out any that show signs of rot. You also set up a small windbreak of succulents to shield the young plants.

🌿 Jenny01:24

Just hold on. Please just hold on.

examine pepper seedlings, pull out rotting ones, arrange succulents as a windbreak around the trays.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I can't think straight if I don't eat, but these peppers won't wait for me to find a snack.

🌿 Jenny01:28

Jenny — walk back toward the cottage from the north cliffs.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't focus. The hunger is making me dizzy, and the air is too heavy. I need to get back to the cottage before I collapse.

🌿 Jenny01:32

Jenny — go to the kitchen, open a tin of corned beef, and eat it quickly.

💭 peek at the thought
I need protein. Something fast. If I don't eat now, I'm going to shake too much to do anything else.
