The Morning Feeding

Jenny sits at the table, gently cupping the seabird chick while it shivers between breaths. Kevin leans over her, watching the barometer needle as the pressure begins to drop. The air inside is heavy and smells of salt and drying sea beet.

The air is heavy and still despite the rising pressure. Jenny moves the seed trays inside the cottage to protect the lettuce and peppers from the humidity and potential damping-off, while Kevin heads to the garden shed to retrieve the wire seedling rack.

It's too cold for this. The pressure is dropping fast.

Squirts a tiny drop of the mixture into the chick's beak and waits.

💭 peek at the thought
The crop is still empty. If it doesn't take the feed, I'm going to lose another thing to this island.

Barometer's at 1004. Dropped three millibars since 0300. Boat's due in three days but the front's moving faster than forecast.

Set the hot-water bottle wrapped in the linen towel beside the chick's box on the table, then pull the stool up and sit, eyes on the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
The chick's crop is still empty. Pressure's falling faster than the barometer shows — I can feel it in my chest. If the supply boat doesn't make the window tomorrow, we're on our own for another cycle.

🌿 Jenny02:50

I need to move the seed trays inside. The humidity will kill the lettuce if it stays like this.

Gently strokes the chick's head with a finger, watching for a swallow.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, we'll be out of lime before the peppers even take root.

Porch stays cooler. Move the tomato and basil trays there — they're at true leaf, they'll hold. Bring the pepper and lettuce cells in here by the stove, drier air. I'll get the tray rack from the shed.

Push back from the table and walk to the porch door, pulling on the oilskin jacket hung by the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the trays. Damping-off spreads fast in this air. The pepper and lettuce cells are already showing fuzz at the soil line — moving them buys time but the porch is cooler. Need to decide which to save first.

🌿 Jenny02:52

I'll check the damping-off first. The lettuce is looking fuzzy at the base.

Picks up the lettuce and pepper trays and carries them toward the warmth of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already moving to the next task while I'm still watching the rot.

🔧 Kevin02:52

Burn the lettuce cells. Bag the peppers separate — might save two of them if we strip the fuzzy soil top and dust with ash.

Step out onto the porch, cross to the garden shed, and pull the wire seedling rack free from the wall hooks, then carry it back toward the cottage kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast. Good. The lettuce cells are gone — damping-off at the base means the roots are rotted. Peppers might pull through if the air dries and the soil surface crusts over. I'll grab the rack and the spare newspaper to catch drips.
