Storm Work at Dock and Cottage
Kevin is at the dock test-fitting the bronze sleeve on the Yanmar shaft; Jenny is at the cottage boiling limpets and inspecting sea-beet seedlings for rot.
Kevin test-fitted the bronze sleeve on the Yanmar prop shaft and found it seated cleanly with no binding. He started the engine and ran it at idle, watching the shaft turn true with no vibration or heat buildup. Jenny examined the sea-beet seedlings on the porch and found no new fungal growth, though the pepper and lettuce cells already lost to damping-off showed no recovery.
You stand on the dock boards, bronze sleeve in hand, Yanmar shaft exposed. The tide is low, water slack against the pilings. Wind whips spray over the gunwales. You wipe the shaft clean with a rag, check the keyway alignment, then start to slide the sleeve on — feeling for bind, for wobble, for the truth of the machining.
Kevin — slide the bronze sleeve onto the Yanmar prop shaft, checking fit and alignment at the keyway. Rotate the shaft by hand to feel for runout or binding.

Kevin — step aboard the dinghy, check fuel valve open, prime the Yanmar, and start the engine. Let it idle while watching the shaft and sleeve for vibration or heat.

You sit at the cottage table with a bowl of steaming limpets and a tray of sea-beet seedlings beside you. The radio crackles static in the corner. You pick up a seedling, magnifier in hand, scanning the soil line for white fungal fuzz. The wind rattles the shutter leak. Outside, the barometer keeps falling.
Not today. Not yet, little things.
I pick up a pair of tweezers and carefully scrape a microscopic speck of white mold from a sea-beet stem, holding my breath.

Jenny — i take a cold limpet from the bowl and chew slowly, watching the grey sky press against the window.
