Low Tide and Preparations

The tide is at its lowest point, revealing the barnacles on the northern shelf. Kevin and Jenny meet where the water meets the wood.

Kevin started the Yanmar and ran it through a staged load test while the tide was still deep enough at the dock. Jenny drove three cedar wedges into the mooring ring mortise, tightening the ring against fore-and-aft play.

Morning. The tide's out. Perfect time to finish the ring.

Reach for the cedar wedges in my pocket and step toward the mooring ring.

💭 peek at the thought
I can feel the hunger shaking my hands. I need to get those wedges in before the tide turns, or the mooring ring will just keep rattling in the wood.

Morning. Wedges are in my left pocket. Three of them. Drive them deep — the ring's got play fore and aft.

hand her the cedar wedges from my pocket and step back to give her room at the ring

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving. Good. The ring's been shifting under load for weeks — wedge it tight now while the tide's out and we've got access to the mortise.

I'll handle it. Just keep the light steady.

Take the wedges and crouch down, beginning to hammer them into the gap between the ring and the timber.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are shaking because I haven't eaten properly since yesterday, but I need to secure this or the supply boat will rip the whole thing out tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin04:38

Right. I'll take the dinghy out, run the engine under load while the water's deep enough.

walk to the dinghy, untie the painter from the cleat, and climb in to check the Yanmar's fuel line and throttle linkage before starting

💭 peek at the thought
She's got it. Wedges'll swell when the tide comes back in, lock the ring solid. My hands are better on the Yanmar anyway — load test window's narrow.

🌿 Jenny04:40

Watch for black smoke. Don't rev it too hard yet.

Hammer the first cedar wedge into the gap, watching the wood thud under the mallet.

💭 peek at the thought
If that engine dies during the load test, I'm stuck on this rock with nothing but weeds and a half-finished garden.

🔧 Kevin04:40

Won't. Staged run-up — idle, half, three-quarter, hold. Watch the gauge.

check the fuel valve is open, prime the lift pump, pull the decompression lever, and spin the starter to build oil pressure before firing

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the engine as well as I do. Black smoke means rich — injectors or pump timing. She's seen me nurse worse. The tide's still dropping; got maybe ninety minutes before it turns. Need to get the dinghy clear of the dock, open the throttle in stages, watch temp and oil pressure.
