Pre-Storm Preparation

Kevin and Jenny stand by the raised garden wall as the sky thickens over the island. Jenny examines the damp sea-beet seed packets while Kevin checks the Yanmar mounting on the dinghy.

The flat sky thickens as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust. Kevin and Jenny retreat from the garden to the cottage to save the sea beet seeds from the coming soak. The air pressure is dropping steadily, signaling a significant wet-season storm as the tide begins to rise against the dock.

Packets holding?

walk to the dinghy at the dock, crouch beside the Yanmar, grip the flywheel and turn it slowly by hand feeling for roughness in the shaft

💭 peek at the thought
The clouds are piling up fast. Barometer's steady but the wind's shifting — smell of rain in it. Jenny's focused on the seeds, good. Means she's not watching me watch the engine mount. Vibration's still there at high RPM. Prop shaft or the bracket. Or both. Need to run it proper before the supply boat shows.

🌿 Jenny09:48

They're damp, but the seals haven't failed yet.

Jenny medical the sea-beet packets into her apron pocket to shield them from the wind, then turns back to the lime-treated patch, tracing the uneven distribution of the soil with her boot.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking the engine again. I just tested the vibration. The salt is eating everything today.

We'll need to re-lime that strip before next sowing. Rain's coming — let's get these packets inside before they soak.

follow Jenny to the cottage porch, take the seed tin from her hand, wipe it dry with my shirt tail, and place it on the shelf under the plastic tarp where it's sheltered from wind and drizzle

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — seals are intact for now. But if this front breaks, moisture'll creep in. Lime patch looks uneven. She's reading the soil like a gauge. Smart. I should've tested pH here before planting. Instead I'm chasing vibration in a damn dinghy.

🌿 Jenny09:50

I know. The barometer is dropping fast anyway.

Jenny takes the packets from her pocket and lays them flat on the dry wooden table, watching the first drops of rain hit the dust outside.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. If those seeds soak now, they'll rot before they can even own.

🔧 Kevin09:52

Rain's here. Let's get under cover and I'll show you what I found in the bilge — that scored bearing surface. Might explain the shake.

pull the cottage door open, step inside, shake rain from my sleeves, and lead Jenny to the workbench where I lay out the spare cutless bearing and a rag with penetrating oil to wipe down the scored shaft section I pulled yesterday

💭 peek at the thought
First drops. Barometer's falling faster than I thought. Rain's not waiting. Seed tin's safe now. But the engine test — can't run it in this. Vibration'll have to wait. Waste of morning light, but the garden won't wait either. Weeds'll explode in this damp.

🌿 Jenny09:52

Let me see. Is it pitting or just friction?

Jenny leans over the workbench, pulling a magnifying glass from her pocket to inspect the metal surface of the shaft.

💭 peek at the thought
The scoring looks deep. If that's the culprit, the high RPMs will just tear the whole assembly apart.

🔧 Kevin09:54

Scoring. Bearing ran dry too long — cutless grooves wore through the rubber, let grit in. Shaft's hard stainless, so it's surface only. Need to sleeve it. Bronze pipe from the water intake fits the OD. Gotta bore the ID to shaft size plus thou clearance, then lap it in.

pick up the bronze pipe section, hold it against the shaft to show the fit, then set it down and pick up the metal file to demonstrate the filing motion I'll need to true the bore

💭 peek at the thought
She catches the light right. Good eye. It's scoring — circumferential, not pitting. Cutless bearing wore through to the shaft. Bronze sleeve's the fix if I can bore it true. No lathe means hand-filing and lapping. Long night's work. But the shaft's salvageable. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:55

If the fit is off by a hair, the vibration will shake the bolts out in an hour.

Jenny takes the file from Kevin, runs her thumb over the teeth to check the bite, then looks at the seed packets on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can sleeve the shaft, I save the Yanmar. But the precision required is high, and my hands are shaking from hunger.
