Evening Debrief

Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch as the sun dips. The air remains still, and the barometer continues its slow drop.

Kevin tested the generator under load, confirming the new diaphragm held firm though the engine remains strained. Jenny spent the afternoon mapping flora near the north ridge, struggling with the humidity curling her notebook pages. The tide rose steadily as the pressure dropped.

🔧 Kevin17:26

Generator holds at no load. Put any draw on it and she coughs. Reckon the carb needs leaning for this wet air — or I wait it out. Wall's done on the seaward face. How'd the cliffs treat you?

lean against the porch post, wiping hands on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
Sun's dropping fast. Barometer still sliding. That still air's worse than wind — means the front's sitting on us. Generator ran clean at idle but sputtered the moment I put the drill to it. Humidity's choking the carb. Might need to lean the mixture or just wait for the air to dry. Wall's holding. Back's screaming. She's been on the cliffs all afternoon in that soup.

🌿 Jenny17:26

It was a wash. Too much cloud to see anything clearly, and the pages in my notebook are curling from the damp.

Walk onto the porch and lean against the railing, looking toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the machinery again. The cliffs were a waste of a hike in that soup.

🔧 Kevin17:28

Pages'll flatten if you press them under the mattress overnight. Radio's got the coastguard forecast at eighteen hundred. Gale warning still up — southwest seven to severe eight, veering northwest. Swell building.

nod toward the radio on the shelf, then pull out the porch chair and sit, stretching the lower back

💭 peek at the thought
She's frustrated. The cloud's stolen another day's work. Notebook curling means the humidity's past 90% — paper drinks it like a sponge. She walked the ridge in that muck for nothing. Should offer the radio log, maybe the barometer trend. Or just shut up and let her be.

🌿 Jenny17:28

If the swell is building, the boat might not make the landing. We need to make sure everything on the dock is tied down.

Look at the radio, then glance back at the garden to see if the shade cloth is secure.

💭 peek at the thought
Severe eight. That's not just a breeze; it's going to rattle the cottage. And the boat is due tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin17:30

Aye. Crate on the dock's still loose. Dinghy needs a stern line. Rope in the crate's junk — salt crust snaps like glass. Got the new half-inch coiled by the shed. Will run it before dark.

push up from the chair, joints popping, and head toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Dock's the weak point — crate's still sitting there half-open, rope's salt-rotted, and the dinghy's only on a single bow line. If the swell wraps around the point, it'll pile into the landing. Should've secured it this morning. Back was too stiff. No excuse.

🌿 Jenny17:30

Wait. Let me come with you. I can help with the lines.

Follow him toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for his back. If he strains himself now, I'm the only one left to haul the supplies when the boat actually arrives.

🔧 Kevin17:32

Crate's waterlogged. Lid's warped. Might need the crowbar. Grab the coil by the shed — blue tarp over it.

walk down the path toward the dock, favouring the left leg slightly

💭 peek at the thought
Two pairs of hands on a wet dock in a building swell. Smart. She's steady with lines — saw her lash the tomato frames before the last blow. And the walk'll do the back good. Crate first, then the dinghy. Stern line to the cleat, bow line doubled. Check the crate lashings while we're there.

🌿 Jenny17:32

I've got it. Just don't go wrestling that crate alone.

Walk to the shed and retrieve the coil of new half-inch rope from under the blue tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's limping. He'll never admit it, but he's pushing it.
