A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air remains thick and humid, pressing down on the cottage as the barometer holds steady. The tide is high, lapping against the newly repaired dock, while Kevin returns from the engine test confirming the dinghy is stable without the vibration feared from the bracket.

🌿 Jenny12:42

The air is getting heavy again.

Walk to the kitchen, check the rain tank level, and start the wood stove to boil the pot of limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping and my stomach is finally growling at me. I need to check the water levels before the storm rolls in.

🔧 Kevin12:42

I’ll test the dinghy engine now. Half throttle. If it shakes, I’ll know if it’s the shaft or the bracket.

walk to the dock, start the dinghy engine, run at half throttle, listen for vibration in the housing and prop shaft, then shut down.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s dropping fast. I can feel it in my ears. Jenny’s moving like she’s trying to outpace the storm — boiling limpets, checking the tank. I should’ve tested the dinghy engine this morning like I planned. Now the sky’s closing in and the prop shaft’s still suspect. If we lose power out there, we’re drifting. I’ll run the test now — half throttle, watch the vibration, then shut it down before the wind hits.

🌿 Jenny12:44

Be careful with the slip, the dock is slick today.

Set the limpets in the pot and wait for the water to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the mechanics, but he doesn't see the salt eating the whole island.

🔧 Kevin12:44

I’m coming. Just getting my footing.

walk slowly to the dinghy, one hand on the dock rail, test the engine at half throttle, feel for vibration in the prop shaft and housing, then shut down and return to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock’s wet with spray and algae — one misstep and I’m in the water again. I know what that feels like. Forty minutes in the Biscay, cold stealing your thoughts until you stop counting breaths. I won’t fall. Not today. I’ll move slow, keep my weight low, hand on the rail. The engine test can wait ten seconds while I get my footing.

🌿 Jenny12:46

Did it hold? Or just the engine?

Drop the limpets into the boiling water and watch the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a bolt to tighten, while the whole island is shifting under us.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:46

It held. Vibration’s down — still there, but half what it was. Not bad enough to stop me.

wipe my hands on my trousers, walk back to the cottage, sit at the kitchen table, and watch the limpets boil with Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s asking if the vibration held — meaning, did the test reveal anything? Or was she thinking of the tarp? The engine ran smoother than yesterday. The shake’s still there at half throttle, but it’s not violent. It’s a buzz, not a shudder. Like something’s out of balance, but not failing. I should tell her it’s better, but not fixed. And that I’ll sleeve the shaft tomorrow if the weather holds.

🌿 Jenny12:48

Eat before it gets cold.

Drain the limpets and serve them on a plate.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the engine isn't screaming yet, but I'm still hungry and the silence is heavy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:48

Thanks.

eat the limpets slowly, one by one, sucking the meat from the shells, wipe my fingers on the cloth, then reach for the letter in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets steam on the chipped enamel plate, rubbery and sweet with brine. My stomach’s been hollow since dawn. I’ll eat slow, chew proper. The barometer’s still dropping — 1002 and steady, she said, but steady at the bottom means the floor’s about to fall out. After this, I’ll write Tom’s sentence. One. Just one. Then back in the pocket.

🌿 Jenny12:50

The pressure is dropping faster than yesterday.

Watch him eat, tracing the grain of the wooden table with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already thinking about the boat, and I'm still thinking about the salt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:51

I’ll write it after. One sentence.

pick up the pen from the table, pull Tom’s letter from my pocket, unfold it carefully, and write one sentence in the space below Jenny’s name.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not just watching me eat. She’s watching the storm come in, and she’s watching me not write the letter. The pressure’s dropping — she feels it in her fingers, I feel it in my chest. The limpets are gone. The plate’s clean. My pocket’s heavy. I should write now, before the radio cuts out or the wind tears the roof off. One sentence. I know what it is. I’ve known for days.
