the keeper's cottage · day 233 · night

The Storm Breaks

The wind howls through the eaves and the rain lashes against the tin roof. Inside, the lantern flickers as the pressure continues to fall.

The steady rain continues through the night, filling the water tank to its capacity. Kevin and Jenny take shelter inside the cottage as the pressure continues to drop and the tide rises against the stone walls.

Barometer's at 995 and falling. This one's going to blow through hard.

Walk to the porch door and pull on oilskin jacket

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping fast. Storm's going to hit before dawn. Need to check the dinghy lines one more time and make sure the generator's lashed down tight.

Check the way ring again. The tide is pulling too hard for the old bolts.

Grab the notebook and the heavy seed tin from the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts north, those seedlings will be shredded. I can't lose this batch; I need more than just sketches.

On it. Grab the wrench from the shelf.

Step outside into the rain and jog toward the dock, collar turned up against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — those mooring bolts are corroded through. If the wind shifts with the tide, we could lose the dinghy altogether.

I've got the wrench! Watch the tension on the line!

Grab the wrench and follow him out into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already out there. I'm the one standing here worrying about salt glands while the world is falling apart.
