The Rising Tide

Kevin and Jenny stand under the eaves of the garden shed as steady rain drums against the corrugated roof. The water tank is now at full capacity, and the air is heavy with the humidity of the wet season.

The steady rain continues to soak the garden, turning the drainage channel into a thick slurry. Jenny manages to clear the main blockage of silt with her spade, while Kevin struggles with the heavy mud, failing to dislodge the stubborn packed debris at the outlet with his fork.

🌿 Jenny15:56

The drainage is getting sluggish. We need to clear the north channel.

wipe condensation off the notebook with my sleeve.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. If this rain doesn't break, the sea beets will rot before they even root.

🔧 Kevin15:57

Grab the spade. I'll get the fork.

walk to the garden shed and pick up the spade leaning against the wall

💭 peek at the thought
North channel's been silting since the last big blow. If we don't clear it before the next front, the garden beds will flood again — lost the lettuce starts that way last month.

🌿 Jenny15:57

Be careful with the fork, the ground is turning to mush near the wall.

take the spade and step out into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so quick to help, but he doesn't see how the soil is turning sour.

🔧 Kevin15:59

Watch the wall footing. I'll work from the channel side.

step out into the rain and move to the north drainage channel, positioning myself on the garden bed side to avoid stressing the wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the clay turns to soup fast. Fork'll punch through the wall footing if I'm not careful.

🌿 Jenny15:59

Don't dig too deep, the stones are already shifting.

press the spade into the mud and start clearing the silt buildup.

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't clear this now, the whole north ridge will be a swamp by morning.

🔧 Kevin16:01

I'll skim the top layer with the fork. You keep the spade low.

insert the garden fork just below the surface and gently lift to loosen the silt without disturbing the underlying stones

💭 peek at the thought
Those are the old drain stones from the first year — if they go, the whole channel collapses. Need to clear silt without touching them.

🌿 Jenny16:02

It's filling faster than I thought. We need to get the channel clear.

shovel a heavy load of silt into the bucket at the edge of the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The mud is thick like paste today. way back is already protesting the cold.

🔧 Kevin16:03

I'll check the outlet. Keep going.

walk down the channel toward the seaward outlet, fork in hand

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's not letting up. Channel's backing up because the outlet's probably choked with weed and drift. Clearing the middle won't help if the end's blocked.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:03

Watch for debris at the end, the silt builds up fast.

scrape the bottom of the channel with the spade and keep digging.

💭 peek at the thought
If that outlet is blocked with salt-grass, the whole patch is lost.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:04

Hand me the bucket when it's full. I'll clear the mouth.

reach the outlet and begin probing with the fork to dislodge debris without damaging the stone lip

💭 peek at the thought
Outlet's where the kelp and plastic snag — last time it was a tangle of net and a buoyant bottle. If that's jammed, we're just moving mud.
