The Heavy Air Before

Kevin and Jenny stand under the eaves of the shed, watching the grey air settle over the garden. A large spruce branch has fallen across the path to the north ridge, blocking the access to the transect.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

Tarp first. Ridge can wait.

walk to the garden to check the loose tarp corner and re-stake it

💭 peek at the thought
The path's blocked but the ridge work can wait. More pressing: that barometer's still falling and the garden tarp corner's been flapping all night. Need to secure it before the wind picks up proper.

🌿 Jenny17:12

The pressure is dropping too fast; if that channel stays blocked, the sea beets rot anyway.

Pick up the spade and walk toward the north channel to begin clearing the silt.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the immediate leak while the island is literally drowning the roots of my work.

🔧 Kevin17:13

Be back in five.

walk to the garden, pull the loose tarp corner tight, drive the stake deep with the heel of my boot, check the other three corners while I'm there

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the channel. Silt buildup at the north end will drown the sea beet patch if the rain comes hard. But that tarp's been flapping since midnight and the gusts are building. Can do both — secure the corner quick, then the spade's waiting by the shed.

🌿 Jenny17:13

Just make sure the stakes are deep; the salt wind is hungry for plastic today.

Wipe the mud off the spade and start digging into the thick silt of the channel.

💭 peek at the thought
Five minutes is enough time for the tide to turn or for my patience to snap.

🔧 Kevin17:14

Done. Heading to the channel.

walk to the north channel where Jenny's digging, pick up the garden fork leaning against the wall, start breaking up the compacted silt beside her

💭 peek at the thought
Salt wind's already taken one tarp this season. These stakes hold if they're deep enough. Three corners solid, this last one just needed the extra bite. Good. Now the channel.

🌿 Jenny17:15

Watch the edge; if we don't clear the flow, the whole patch becomes a marsh.

Use the spade to shovel the heavy mounds of grey silt out of the channel and onto the grass.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's finally being useful, even if it is just to move mud.

🔧 Kevin17:17

Got it. Working the edge now.

use the fork to loosen the packed silt at the channel's edge, then shove it toward Jenny so she can lift it out with the spade

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the gradient. One blocked spot and the whole sea beet transect turns to soup. Fork's better for breaking the crust, spade for shifting the bulk. Keep the flow moving toward the lower outlet where it can drain.

🌿 Jenny17:17

Keep it moving. We need this channel clear before the next rain hits the lime.

major the spade deep into the artwork and heave a full scoop of silt out of the channel.

💭 peek at the thought
The silt is heavy as lead, like the island trying to swallow everything whole.
