Evening at the high tide

The humidity thickens as the sun fades. The tide continues to lap against the pilings.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine under load in the dinghy, confirming the vibration was coming from the prop shaft rather than the bracket. Jenny attempted to prepare the lime-treated patch for the sea beet seedlings but slipped on the slick mud, wrenching her ankle and leaving the foot throbbing and swollen.

🌿 Jenny20:07

The way is holding, but it's going to drop.

Jenny scrapes the last of grease from the tin with a fork and sets it in the sink.

💭 peek at the thought
Six days until the boat. If it doesn't come, I'll be eating salt and seeds by next month.

🔧 Kevin20:07

Aye. Got a few hours before it turns proper.

Walk to the radio shelf, pick up the microphone, key it briefly on the supply boat frequency, then set it back down.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer too. The way she scrapes the tin clean — doesn't waste a thing. Radio's still dead but she keeps checking it anyway.

🌿 Jenny20:09

I should finish the north wall tomorrow before the rain starts.

Jenny stands up and walks to the porch, watching the darkening clouds over the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking for a ghost that isn't going to answer.

🔧 Kevin20:09

Mortar's in the shed. Lime mix. I'll bring it up first light.

Walk to the porch doorway, lean against the frame, look out at the water with her.

💭 peek at the thought
North wall. She means the garden wall on the seaward side — the one we raised two courses last month but never capped. Mortar won't set if the rain comes down hard. She's right to want it done.

🌿 Jenny20:17

The sea beet salt glands are crystallizing faster on the north patch. I'll plant the thrift above the strand line tonight.

Jenny pulls her notebook from her coat pocket and traces a finger along the salt-stained pages. </think>THOUGHT: He's buying time I can't. Jenny opens the rusted seed tin and lets the night air carry the scent of heirloom earth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already planning for storms that might not come.

🔧 Kevin20:18

I'll bring the trowel and the lime bucket.

Turn from the doorway, head back inside to the kitchen, pull the heavy iron trowel from the shelf and set it by the door, then fetch the lime bucket from the corner and set it next to the trowel.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the island better than the barometer. Salt glands crystallizing means the spray's reaching higher up the ridge — storm's pushing in faster than the pressure says. Thrift above the strand line is smart; it'll hold the soil when the waves come over. She knows this place in her fingers.

🌿 Jenny20:19

Good. I'll have the sea beet seedlings ready on the west slope.

Jenny grabs her notebook and sketches the north wall's mortar joints in fading light. She checks the mooring ring from the window—still shifting in the swell. The seed tin clicks shut. Tomorrow, she'll plant thrift and samphire.

💭 peek at the thought
The trowel's head is cold iron, like the bucket.

🔧 Kevin20:26

I'll take a look at the ring after first light. Before the mortar.

Open the kitchen door, step outside onto the porch, walk to the rail, and lean on it, staring out at the dark water where the dock disappears into the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking three steps ahead — seedlings ready, wall repaired, mooring ring still a worry. The way she sketches the joints tells me she's already measuring how much lime and sand we'll need. Mooring ring's shifting — not safe for the supply boat. I should've fixed it when the tide was low. She doesn't say it, but she's counting on me to get to it before the wind picks up.

🌿 Jenny20:27

I marked the soil pH log for the north beds—6.8 after the lime. I should've brought the bronze sleeve measurements to the dock.

Jenny pulls a strip from her water test kit and checks the rain tank gauge. 391 litres. Still enough for tomorrow. She closes the tin and tucks it into her jacket, next to her heart. </think> Jenny walks to the window and watches Kevin's si

💭 peek at the thought
The ring holds cedar wedges, but I've seen timber flex in these tides. Cedar wedges held against rising tide—why won't this ring hold?

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin20:28

Sleeve's in my jacket. Had it since the dinghy test.

Reach into my jacket pocket, feel the wrapped bronze sleeve, pull it out just enough to show her the oilcloth end, then tuck it back.

💭 peek at the thought
She's still running numbers in her head — pH log, water levels, bronze sleeve for the prop shaft. She thinks I forgot it. I didn't. It's in my pocket, wrapped in oilcloth. She checks the tank like it's a promise — 391 litres, enough for tomorrow. Always measuring, always preparing. She tucks the seed tin close — not just seeds, but the thing we came here to grow.
