The Heavy Air Before

Jenny sits on the lime-treated wall, cradling her swollen ankle while watching the barometer drop. Kevin kneels by the heavy garden tarp, checking the moisture levels of the sea beet seedlings. The air is still and smells of coming rain and wet earth.

The heavy air hangs over the garden as the barometer continues to drop. Kevin attempts to stabilize the dock mooring ring but finds the wood still shifting despite the wedges. Jenny tries to manage the sea beet seedlings, worrying about the humidity and the coming storm.

Barometer's dropping. You're watching it like it'll change if you stare hard enough.

kneel beside her on the wall, peel the tape roll from my pocket, and take hold of her ankle without asking

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer instead of the seedlings. The purple's crept past her boot top now — I saw it when she shifted. She won't ask. Won't let me. But the tape's in my pocket and the splints are by the stove, and I'm done waiting for permission.

I'm checking the tide. The seedlings are already in.

Flinch slightly as his hands touch the brace, tightening the grip on the improvised support.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful, but his hands are always cold from the salt.

🔧 Kevin20:44

The brace is trash. Cutting circulation. Hold still.

slice through the fabric strips with my knife, peel back the driftwood splints, and start wrapping fresh tape — anchor, figure-eight, lock the heel — firm but not tight

💭 peek at the thought
Flinch tells me everything. The brace is doing nothing but trapping heat and pressure. She's checking the tide because the supply boat's due in five days and the mooring ring still rocks. We both know it.

🌿 Jenny20:45

Just don't make it too tight. I need to walk to the ridge tomorrow.

Lean back against the stone wall, watching his hands as the tape adheres to the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so clinical with the knife, like the body is just machinery.

🔧 Kevin20:46

You won't walk the ridge. You'll hobble to the spring, sit there an hour, and call it the ridge. Tape holds either way.

finish the last anchor strip, press it down with my thumb, then sit back on my heels and wipe tape residue off my fingers

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge is a four-hour round trip with elevation. On a good ankle. On this one — she'll turn back at the spring and call it done. But she'll go anyway. That's the point.

🌿 Jenny20:47

We'll see. The sea beets need a check before the boat comes.

Flex the ankle to test the tension of the wrap, then look out at the grey water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the spring, but he's wrong about the view.
