A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin works on the dock to reinforce the mooring ring with cedar shims before the tide turns, while Jenny watches, nursing her chafed ankle as the wind picks up from the west.

🌿 Jenny20:58

(To own) Dammit, the wind is turning faster than the forecast.

Sit on the porch steps, rubbing the chafed ankle, and watch the sky darken over the west.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to ruin the seedlings if I don't get the cover right. way own is screaming.

Boat's due in five days. Ring won't hold a crane load if the swell builds past two metres.

Walk to the porch rail, scan the western horizon, then head down to the dock with the heavy wrench and cedar shims to drive the mooring ring solid before the tide turns.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest faster than the barometer said. She's favouring that ankle hard — won't put weight on it even sitting still. The mooring ring's still loose in its mortise; if the supply boat tries to come alongside in this swell with a shifting ring, we lose the dock finger.

🌿 Jenny21:00

(To Kevin) Make sure the shims are deep, the wood is soft from rot.

Stand up, wince at the ankle, and follow him to the dock to watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the swell, but he's always looking at the horizon instead of the roots.

Mortise is rotten halfway through. Wedges won't hold. Gonna bore it out and epoxy a greenheart plug, then set the ring in that.

Walk to the dock with the heavy wrench, auger bit, brace, and epoxy tub; kneel at the mooring ring mortise and start boring out the soft wood to clean bore for a plug.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the mortise cheeks are punky half an inch in. Wedges alone won't bite. Need to epoxy the ring shank or sister a hardwood plug into the mortise first. She's limping bad, won't admit it.

🌿 Jenny21:02

(To Kevin) Use the heavy-duty epoxy, the salt's already eaten half the own.

Squat on the wet stone, nursing my ankle, and watch the drill bite into the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get that seal right, the whole dock goes under in the first gale.

🔧 Kevin21:03

Tub's mostly gone. Got enough for the plug if I bulk it with lime and sawdust. Ring gets a through-bolt into the stringer below for insurance.

Bore out the mortise to clean wood, sweep chips clear, mix the remaining epoxy with crushed lime and sawdust to a peanut-butter stiffness, pack it tight around a greenheart dowel, then drill a 10mm hole through the ring eye and into the sou

💭 peek at the thought
Only thick residue left in the tub after the stringer joint. Might not be enough for a full plug and ring bed. Could mix what's left with sawdust and lime to stretch it, or run a stainless pin through the ring eye into sound timber below the mortise as backup. She's shivering in the wind — ankle's purple to the calf now.
