Storm supper

Kevin and Jenny stand on the cottage porch under the tarp, rain lashing horizontally. The generator thrums inside. The barometer reads 1002 hPa and still falling. They are wet, tired, and hungry, moving toward the door.

Kevin prepared the stove and shared boiled limpets and sea beet while the air pressure dropped. Jenny returned from the north cliffs to complete her survey and finish sketches of the sea beet morphology. The air grew heavy and still as the storm approached.

🌿 Jenny18:29

I'm freezing. Let's get the stove started.

Step inside, kick the door shut, and peel off the wet layers by the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the generator fails now, we're in the dark with the storm.

🔧 Kevin18:29

Stove's laid. Just needs a match.

step inside, pull the door shut against the wind, crouch by the stove and strike a match to the kindling

💭 peek at the thought
The cold goes deep tonight. Barometer still dropping — this isn't done with us yet. Stove first, then food, then the radio at 1800. Need to tell her about the coastguard message. Not tonight. Tonight we eat.

🌿 Jenny18:33

The limpets are cold, but I need to eat.

Set the bowl of boiled limpets and sea beet on the table and sit by the stove to warm up.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are shaking so hard I can barely hold the notebook.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:33

Eat. I'll get the coffee going.

fill the kettle from the tank, set it on the stove top, pull out two mugs and the coffee jar

💭 peek at the thought
She's shivering. Food first. Talk later. The limpets won't kill us cold.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:39

Thanks. The wind is really coming up today.

Pick up the fork and start eating the limpets, watching the fire catch.

💭 peek at the thought
I can still feel the salt on my skin and the chill in my marrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:39

Aye. Due to hit force nine by midnight if the trend holds.

spoon coffee into the mugs, pour hot water when the kettle whistles, set one mug in front of her

💭 peek at the thought
She's stating the obvious. Wind's been building all day. Barometer at 1002 and falling says it'll get worse before it breaks. She knows that. She's just talking to fill the quiet.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:43

Then we hope the roof holds. I need the light.

Wrap both hands around the hot mug for warmth and take a slow sip of coffee.

💭 peek at the thought
Force nine? The generator won't last if the diaphragm blows again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:43

Roof's fine. Generator's the weak link. Running it at 1800 for the scheduled call, then killing it overnight to save the diaphragm. We'll manage.

take a sip of my own coffee, pull the notebook from my pocket, set it on the table beside the limpet bowl

💭 peek at the thought
Roof held through worse last winter. Stones are sound. It's the generator I'm watching — diaphragm's new, oil's fresh, but twelve hours under load in this damp... She needs the light for her sketches. I need it for the radio.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:47

Good. I'll finish the sea beet sketches while I have light.

Chew a piece of sea beet, the salt hitting my tongue, and watch the fire grow in the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator dies, I can't dry the seed packets. The mold will win in the humidity.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:47

I'll run the generator at 1745. Warm the engine first. Radio at 1800 sharp.

stand, stretch the stiff lower back, walk to the radio shelf and check the battery gauge — 60%

💭 peek at the thought
She draws what she sees. Records it. I fix what breaks. Different ways of holding onto this place. The notebook's got her sketches, my generator logs, the wall repairs, the tide tables. Evidence we were here.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:49

I'll have the report ready.

Open the notebook to the page with the sea beet morphology and pick up the pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
Sixty percent isn't much for a long call. I need to be brief.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:49

Right.

pull the chair out at the table, sit, open the notebook to a blank page, uncapped pen hovering — the letter to Tom still unwritten

💭 peek at the thought
Report ready. She means the weekly log for the trust — seabird counts, plant surveys, weather readings. Not the other thing. Not the coastguard message I didn't read out. She'll put down what she observed on the cliffs today: thrift, sea campion, the fulmar colony holding on. She won't ask what I heard on Channel 16. She'll wait.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:52

Don't let the ink smudge if it's still humid in here.

Begin sketching the intricate vein pattern of the sea beet leaf, pressing the pencil firmly into the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's staring at that blank page again. He's not writing to Tom; he's just hiding.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin18:53

Pencil then.

flip the pen in my hand, pull the pencil from behind my ear, press the point to paper and start writing — Dear Tom,

💭 peek at the thought
Ink smudges. Graphite doesn't. She knows that. She's telling me to write anyway.
