Low Tide Inspection

The tide has reached its lowest point, exposing the slick rocks and kelp. You meet at the shore to assess the tide pools.

Kevin and Jenny spent the midday at the tide pools under a warm rain. Kevin attempted to manage his swollen ankle but found the pain too distracting, while Jenny focused on gathering limpets and sea beet for later.

Look at the limpets; they're holding on tighter than that dock ring.

Lean against the rock shelf to take weight off my ankle and sketch the intricate pattern of the tide pool cracks.

💭 peek at the thought
The octopus is hiding in that crevice, smart enough to stay out of the current while I just stand here rotting.

Limpets got better metallurgy than the dock. Titanium-reinforced radula, self-sharpening. We got copper nails that bend and oak that rots.

Crouch at the pool's edge, pull the intake screen from the Yanmar's raw-water pickup, shake it clean of moon jelly remnants, and run a finger along the cutless bearing housing feeling for warmth or grit.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong about the limpets. The dock ring's held by three split cedar wedges and hope. These shells have the tide's own engineering — forty million years of holdfast design. My ankle throbs in sympathy with hers. The intake screen's clear for now; jellyfish move with the slack. Cutless bearing's the real question. Need to pull the prop and feel for play before the supply boat brings the spare. If the shaft's scored, the sleeve I machined buys us nothing.

🌿 Jenny22:58

If the intake is clogged, the engine doesn'tization how sharp the radula is.

Reach down to peel the damp tape from my ankle, wincing as it catches the swollen, angry skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about metallurgy while the whole island is literally dissolving itself under our feet.

🔧 Kevin22:59

Intake's clear. Bearing's singing though — slight whine at idle. Shaft play's minimal but the cutless is scored. Spare's on the boat's manifest. Three weeks if they come.

Set the screen back, wipe hands on thighs, and crouch beside her to take over the tape job — slower this time, peeling at the edge with a fingernail to spare the raw skin, letting the cool air hit the inflamed tissue before re-wrapping with

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. The engine's the least of it — her ankle's hot to the touch through the tape, the swelling past the brace now. Infection's taken hold. She knows it. I know it. The supply boat's three days out if it comes. No antibiotics in the kit, just vinegar and willow bark tea. The radula line was a joke. A bad one. She's hurting bad enough to make jokes.

🌿 Jenny23:00

If the boat doesn't come, we're just part of the tide pools.

Watch his hands as he wraps the ankle, counting the pulses in the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
Three weeks is a long time for a boat to fail and an own to give up.

🔧 Kevin23:01

Boat's due in three. Radio's dead but the forms are ready. If they don't show, I'll row the dinghy to the shipping lane. Two days each way. You'll stay here.

Finish the wrap snug but not tight, secure the end with a tucked fold, and press the back of my hand to her forehead — hot, dry. Then stand, offering a hand up.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not joking now. The pulse under my fingers is rapid, thready — sepsis territory. Three days to the boat. If. The barometer's steady but the sky's building west. She's counting my pulse counting hers. We're both thinking the same thing: the radio's dead, the medevac forms are signed but useless without a voice to hear them. I should've sent the Tom letter. Should've said more than four lines. The bearing whine is the least of what's broken.
