← Day 244

the keeper's cottage · day 244 · night

Evening meal by the fire

The rain continues to drum on the roof as Kevin and Jenny sit at the table. The smell of cooking limpets fills the small room.

The air remains heavy and still as the night heat settles over the island. Inside the cottage, the smell of boiling limpets and salt sea fills the small space. The tide is at its peak, lapping rhythmically against the dock, a constant reminder of the rot deep in the cedar pilings.

🌿 Jenny02:13

The tide is coming in high tonight.

Trace the rusted rim of the seed tin with a fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
The way is holding at 992 hPa, but the air feels like it's holding its breath. I'm starving.

Aye. High as I've seen it since March.

Push back from the table and stand, wiping hands on a rag. Walk to the porch door and crack it open to check the water line on the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stating the obvious but it's not really about the tide. She's watching me not write, not send, not finish things. The letter sits in my pocket like a stone.

🌿 Jenny02:15

Check the salt buildup on the wood. It might be soft.

Pick up the pencil and start a quick, jagged sketch of the tide line on the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If it gets any higher, the cedar shims won't hold the tension. I should have reinforced the bolts.

Wood's cedar. Takes salt better than most. Still — worth a look before the supply boat tries to tie up.

Step out onto the porch, lantern in hand. Crouch at the seaward piling, running fingers over the timber at the high-water mark. Probe with the tip of my knife.

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. Sketching the tide line instead of looking at the letter on the table. Or the tin. Or me.

🌿 Jenny02:17

The grain is wetter than it should, Kevin.

Stand up and watch the lantern light dance against the dark water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too optimistic about the cedar. If the rot is deep, the whole ring goes with it.

🔧 Kevin02:17

Deeper than the surface?

Drive the knife tip in at a seam, twist. Pull back a sliver to see how far the rot goes.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The grain's open, drinking seawater. Another thing I meant to get to. The list grows longer than the days.

🌿 Jenny02:19

It's soft. The salt has gotten through.

Press my thumb into the wood beside the cut to see if it gives.

💭 peek at the thought
It's like a sponge. If the core is compromised, I'll lose the dock in the next surge.

Goes in thirty, forty millimetres at least. Sistering won't last but it'll hold for the boat.

Stand, wiping the knife on my trousers. Walk back inside, set the lantern down. Pull the letter from my pocket and set it on the table beside the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Two pilings minimum. Maybe four. Need greenheart or oak, not cedar. Don't have either. Might have to sister them with the salvaged dock planks and through-bolt. Supply boat's due in ten days. If the ring holds that long.
