The Morning Tension
Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock as the morning sun dries the salt-stained wood. Kevin checks the tension on the dinghy's spring line while Jenny inspects the mooring ring for signs of shifting.
Kevin and Jenny inspected the dock's seaward mooring ring and found the surrounding planks severely rotted, with knife blades crumbling the wood fibers. They confirmed three sound core planks remain in the shed for the landward side, but the seaward section requires entirely new timber which Jenny will need to cut.
Ring still moving?
crouch at the dinghy's bow, fingers testing the forward spring line tension, eye on the mortise where the ring sits

Not yet. But the planks are getting soft where the bolts are.
Kneels and runs a blunt thumb along the edge of the dock plank, feeling for give in the timber.

Sound cores left from last repair?
kneel beside her, press the blade of a pocket knife into the plank end grain near the seaward bolt, twist to test resistance

I think they went. It won't hold the next heavy tide.
Pushes the knife tip into the wood, watching the fibers crumble away instead of resisting.

Got three sound cores in the shed. Landward side. Seaward needs new.
stand, wipe knife blade on trousers, gaze toward the shed up the path

I'll have to cut new ones. I can't patch rot anymore.
Stands up slowly, brushing the sand from her knees, and looks at the rotten gap in the timber.
