The Rain Breaks

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy drops hit the roof. The wind picks up, rattling the eaves.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic thrum against the cottage roof, turning the world into a blur of grey. Inside, the air smells of damp earth and drying sea beet leaves. The water tank has finally reached its capacity, the overflow pipe singing under the relentless downpour.

Check the window latches, Kevin. The wind is catching the porch door.

Sets a handful of sea much leaves on the table and rubs her lower back.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is going to overflow again, but I'm too tired to move the buckets.

On it.

walk to the porch door, check the latch engagement, drive the cedar shim deeper under the bottom hinge if there's still gap, then check both window latches on the kitchen side

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here sooner than the barometer said. Porch door's the weak point — hinge side's always had play.

Don't force the shim, you'll split the frame.

Slowly stands up and moves toward the wood stove to check the fire.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving so fast. I can't even get my knees to unlock properly.

🔧 Kevin04:05

Tap it in. Not driving.

tap the cedar shim gently with the heel of my hand, testing the door swing after each tap until the latch catches clean, then check the two kitchen window latches

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Frame's old. Split it and we've got a real problem. Tap it, don't drive it.
