A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin cut and fitted three salvaged planks to sister the rotted dock timber around the mooring ring, bedding them in epoxy. Jenny's epoxy batch failed to cure properly in the heat, leaving the joint weak. The mooring ring remains loose and shifts under load.

🌿 Jenny04:56

The mooring ring's splitting worse than I thought.

measure the crack in the dock timber with calipers from the mechanic kit.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock is literally coming apart and Kevin's focused on the garden while I fix what he won't look at. One tomato seed in the ground and I'll know if this island lets me stay.

I'll sister it with the salvaged planks. Give me the calipers—I'll mark where to cut.

walk to the dock, take the calipers from Jenny, measure the split, then go to the shed and retrieve the three sound dock planks we salvaged earlier.

💭 peek at the thought
The mooring ring's crack is widening—water's getting in, rotting the timber from inside. If it fails before the supply boat, we lose our only tie to the mainland. I need to reinforce it now, not wait.

I'll prep the epoxy mixture. And Kevin? Try not to let the boat scrape the new planks—salt corrosion will eat through them faster than you can say "structural integrity."

retrieve epoxy from the shed and mix a small batch on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's taking the lead on the structural work while I document the salt damage. The salvaged planks won't last in this marine environment—need to get epoxy and fiberglass before the supply boat comes.

Understood. I'll cut the planks to sister the rotten section, leave them proud by ten mill, and bed them in epoxy. Hand me the mix when it's ready.

walk back to the shed, get the saw, measure and cut the three salvaged planks to length, then return to the dock and begin chiseling out the rotted timber to fit the sisters.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—new wood won't last if it's constantly abraded. We need to set the sister planks proud, not flush, and seal every joint. Epoxy's our best shot at keeping salt out.
