Evening at the cottage

The porch light flickers against the gathering dark. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table, planning the final six days before the supply boat arrives.

Kevin heads to the dock at the rising tide to reinforce the mooring ring with the new bolts. Jenny works in the garden to secure the tarp corners against the south-east wind and plants the first heirloom tomato seed.

Six days. Dock ring first — tide's right tomorrow morning. Yanmar alignment check after. Radio aerial if the insulator holds. Garden tarp corners. Water test. Letter." I tap the table. "That's the order.

pull the notebook closer, flip to a fresh page, write the six items in pencil

💭 peek at the thought
The list is solid. Six days. Six things. Maybe seven. The vibration at idle still nags — cutless bearing, but I'll check the alignment one more time before I commit to the spare. Tom's letter. That's the one I keep not saying out loud.

Check the bolts twice. I don't want that ring shearing again.

Stand up, stretch my aching back, and walk to the kitchen to check the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock doesn't hold, the boat won't land, and I'm stuck here with nothing but weeds and salt.

Bolts first. Then the sister planks. Epoxy bedding, through-bolts, nylocs. Not cedar this time — the old dock planks we salvaged. Sound cores.

watch her move to the stove, then reach for my tea mug, fingers still stiff from the wrench work

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The mortise is rotten three feet back. Three cedar wedges split, three oak wedges split. The bronze bolt holds but the wood around it is powder. Tomorrow I sister it proper or we lose the dock when the boat comes alongside.

🌿 Jenny05:25

Use the nylocs. I just need it to hold for one more season.

Pick up the rusted seed tin from the table and traces the rim with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the mechanics, but I'm worried about the wood turning to mush.

🔧 Kevin05:27

Nylocs. Through-bolts. Sound cores. I'll mix the epoxy slow — let it kick in the shade.

stand, pour dregs of tea into the tin can by the stove, wipe my hands on my trousers, and head for the door to grab the crowbar from the porch rack

💭 peek at the thought
One more season. That's what she said last year. And the year before. The tin's cold under her thumb. Same as mine. We're both counting on time we don't have.

🌿 Jenny05:27

Don't let it get too fast in this heat.

Set the seed tin down on the counter and watch him head out into the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so confident in the hardware, but the salt eats everything here eventually.
