NIGHT

The rain shows no signs of slowing, and the tide is beginning to turn, the first small waves reaching toward the exposed pilings.

The rain has turned into a heavy downpour, drumming against the corrugated roof and lashing the dock. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the new pilings as Kevin and Jenny huddle under the porch, the air smelling of salt and damp earth.

🌿 Jenny06:21

The water is rising faster than I thought. We need to get these bolts tight before the surge hits them.

Stands up, wipes her wet hands on her trousers, and walks back to the dock to check the way ring.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide comes back too fast, the epoxy won't hold before it sets. I need to check the tension one last time.

Right behind you.

Walk back to the dock and grab the heavy wrench to torque the mooring ring bolts before the water rises further.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the tide's turning and the surge will test those new bolts. Better to snug them now while we can still see what we're doing.

🌿 Jenny06:23

Be careful with the torque. The wood is soft, it might strip if you go too hard.

Kneels back down on the timber, placing her hand over the bolt to feel for any slipping as he works.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually helping for once. If these way fail, the whole jetty goes into the surf during the next storm.

🔧 Kevin06:25

Won't lean on it. Just snug.

Apply steady, measured pressure on the wrench — firm but not brutal — watching the bolt head seat and feeling for any give in the wood under Jenny's hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows this timber better than I do — watched her nurse it through two winters. If she says ease up, I ease up.

🌿 Jenny06:25

It's tight enough. Let's see if the tide actually respects it while we wait.

Runs a hand over the surface of the bolt, checking for any new cracks forming in the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but that rot is deep. I can feel the fibers yielding under the pressure.

🔧 Kevin06:27

Aye.

Wipe the wrench clean on the rag, tuck it back in the tool belt, and stand to watch the water climb the pilings — checking the ring for any shift as the surge hits.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Holds. Now we wait and see if the sea agrees.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:27

Let's get back to the way. The rain is getting worse and I'm freezing out.

Stands up slowly, her knees aching, and follows him away from the edge toward the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is coming up fast. If that ring pulls out, the dinghy is lost to the current.

🔧 Kevin06:29

Come on.

Turn and walk with Jenny back along the jetty toward the cottage, keeping pace with her slow steps, shoulders hunched against the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — we’ve done what we can here. Better to get out of this wind before it soaks through to the bone.
