Midday checks and the supply boat letter
Kevin is at the keeper's cottage preparing the radio letter; Jenny is at the garden inspecting the heirloom seed tin and culling diseased seedlings.
No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.
You sit at the cottage table with the folded letter, the shortwave radio cold beside you. The barometer on the wall reads 1000 hPa steady. You pick up the microphone, wait for the morning packet window, and key the set — static hisses, then Tom's frequency clears enough for a brief burst.
Tom, this is Kevin. Sorrel Island. Packet two. All well here. Engine running. Garden holding. Supply boat due in four days. No reply needed. Just wanted you to know. Kevin out.
key the microphone and transmit the letter to Tom on the morning radio packet

You kneel beside the seed trays, tweezers in hand, and lift the cloth wrap from the heirloom tin. The lid seals tight but condensation beads the inner rim. You set the tin in the shade and turn to the trays — two more lettuce cells and one pepper show the white fuzz of damping-off at the stem base.
Not today. Not all of you.
Use the tweezers to pluck the infected seedlings from the soil and drop them into the waste bucket.

Jenny — open the heirloom seed tin and inspect the seeds for any sign of damp or mold.
