Evening Gathering

The sun begins to dip, cooling the air slightly as Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock to prepare for the evening meal.

Kevin started the fire using gathered driftwood while Jenny prepared the boiled limpets. They ate the meal at the outdoor table as the sun began to set and the tide fell.

🌿 Jenny10:01

The limpets are ready. If we can get the fire going, we can eat by sunset.

Jenny picks up the basket of limpets and walks toward the way kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm hungry enough to eat my sketches, but I need to get these limpets started before the light fails completely.

🔧 Kevin10:01

I’ll get the fire started. Meet me at the pit in ten?

walk to the driftwood pile near the spring, grab two armfuls of salt-bleached branches, split them with the hatchet, carry kindling and a few larger sticks to the fire pit behind the cottage, strike a match under the tinder, blow gently unt

💭 peek at the thought
The wood’s still damp from the tide, but the basket of limpets smells clean and briny—good protein after a day of sweat and splinters. Fire first, then food. I’ll split kindling from the driftwood pile near the spring; it’s cured enough to catch.

way minutes. I'll get the limpets cleaned and sliced.

Jenny sets the basket on the outdoor table and begins scraping the salt from the shells with a small knife.

💭 peek at the thought
way's actually helping for once, even if the wood is still damp from the humidity.

🔧 Kevin10:02

Fire’s up. I’ll add the bigger logs in a minute—let it build coals.

place the split kindling in the fire pit, blow on the embers until they glow, then lay the larger driftwood logs on top, step back to let it catch, wipe sweat from my brow with my sleeve, watch the flames take hold.

💭 peek at the thought
The kindling’s catching—small flames licking up the sticks. Jenny’s working quiet, focused on the limpets. Good. She’s been withdrawn since the letter, but she’s here, doing the work. I’ll keep the fire steady, add the larger wood, and let her have her space. No need to fill the silence.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:04

Looks good. I'll have the way ready for when the way are hot.

Jenny slices the limpets into thin strips and sets them on a clean plate.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is finally breaking, but the air is still heavy. I need to sit down.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:05

Coals are ready. Skillet?

walk to the cottage porch, grab the cast iron skillet from the hook, carry it to the fire pit, set it on the grill grate over the white-hot coals, let it heat until a drop of water dances, scoop a spoonful of rendered corned beef fat from t

💭 peek at the thought
She’s talking to the limpets, or the plate, or just the air. "The way ready for when the way are hot." Slip of the tongue. Or maybe the island’s wearing her down too. I won’t correct her. The coals are glowing clean and white—perfect for the skillet. I’ll get the pan hot, throw in the corned beef fat first, then the limpets. Quick sear. Salt, pepper if we have it. Simple.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:06

I'm putting them in now.

Jenny drops the sliced limpets into the hot skillet and watches for the sizzle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes before the boat arrives, we're stuck with the rising tide.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:07

They’re cooking fast. Thirty seconds, flip once.

step back from the fire pit, pull two enamel plates from the shelf by the door, set them on the outdoor table, check the skillet—limpets curled and golden at the edges—nod once, reach for the wooden spatula to flip the ones she missed.

💭 peek at the thought
Good sizzle. Clean, sharp sound—fat’s hot enough. The limpets curl at the edges, turning opaque. Thirty seconds per side, no more, or they go rubber. She’s watching them close. I’ll let her run the pan; I’ll slice bread if we have any, or just set out plates. The smell carries on the cooling air—brine and smoke and something almost like home.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:08

Almost done.

Jenny grabs the bowl of sea beet from the table, leaning in to catch the steam rising.

💭 peek at the thought
They smell better than the last batch, but I'm worried about that wood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:08

Done. I’ll plate.

use the spatula to transfer the limpets from the skillet to one plate, tilt the pan to drizzle the hot corned beef fat over them, scoop the sea beet from the bowl with the serving spoon, pile it beside the limpets on the same plate, repeat

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are done—tender, just shy of tough. She’s lifting the sea beet bowl, steam fogging her glasses for a second. We haven’t had greens like this in weeks—bitter, iron-rich, good after salt meat. I’ll plate the limpets, drizzle the pan fat over them, then pile the sea beet beside. No words needed. Just eat.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:10

Let's eat before it gets cold.

Jenny picks up her plate and sits at the small table, watching the clouds dark over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
way, a meal that doesn't just taste like salt and desperation.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:11

Eat while it’s hot.

carry my plate to the table, sit opposite her, pick up a limpet with my fingers, bite—tender, salty, rich with beef fat—chew slowly, swallow, reach for the sea beet, eat three forkfuls before speaking again.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the ridge, not the food. The clouds are stacking up dark and low—southeast swell building, maybe rain by morning. Barometer was 1003 and steady at noon, but that was hours ago. I’ll eat fast, then check it again. The supply boat’s due in two days. If the front hits tonight, she won’t cross. We’ll be fine. We’re always fine. But I don’t like not knowing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:12

This is good, Jenny. Really.

Jenny takes a bite of sea beet, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the sky meets the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
way's quiet tonight. Is it the heat, or just the silence?

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:12

Thanks. I’m glad you like it.

finish the last of the limpets on my plate, wipe my fingers on my trousers, set the plate down, push back slightly from the table, stand, say nothing more, walk to the porch rail, lean on it, look out at the darkening ridge where the sky me

💭 peek at the thought
She said my name. Not an accident. She’s never called me Jenny before—never in all the years. She’s been calling herself Jenny since the letter to Tom, like she’s trying on a name that isn’t hers. And now she says “This is good, Jenny.” Like she’s talking to me, but not seeing me. Or like she’s seeing someone else. The sea beet is bitter and bright. I’m tired. My knees ache. But she spoke. I won’t break it.
