The Pressure Rises

Kevin and Jenny stand by the dock pilings as the air grows heavy and still. Kevin attempts to seat a cedar wedge into the sister knee reinforcement, while Jenny watches the barometer needle continue to drop.

Kevin and Jenny worked together to reinforce the dock’s mooring ring, driving new 150‑mm stainless bolts through a freshly repaired sister knee and securing the ring with cedar shims. Kevin’s mechanical skill allowed him to torque the bolts to 35 Nm, while Jenny’s building skill helped align the ring but left a slight mis‑alignment that could loosen under load. They finished the job just before the tide turned, avoiding a potential swell‑induced shear.

It won't hold, Kevin. The moisture is already too deep in the core.

Reach out and touch the surface of the timber, feeling for the give of the decay beneath the salt.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is too soft for these wedges; he's just hammering nails into rot that's already given up.

🔧 Kevin10:28

Mm.

pull the split wedge free, toss it onto the pile of failed shims, reach for the longer stainless through-bolts from the supply boat stores

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The wood's punk all the way through. These wedges are just buying time, and not much of it.

🌿 Jenny10:28

If you use the 150mm ones, you have to reinforce the sister knee first.

Step back to give him room, sketching the way the wood is fraying in the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Those bolts will just pull through the pulpy grain when the first swell hits tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin10:30

Right. Sister knee first, then the bolts through both.

lift the spruce sister knee into place against the rotted piling, line it up with the mortise, and begin driving the first 150mm bolt through the knee into the sound timber aft of the decay zone

💭 peek at the thought
She sees the grain failing where I only feel the give. Trust her eye.

🌿 Jenny10:30

Make sure the way ring stays aligned. If that bolt shears, the whole jetty will shift.

Watch the bolt sink into the wood, checking for any splitting in the spruce under the pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's hitting the sound wood, but the rest of this joint is a ghost.

🔧 Kevin10:32

Holding it steady.

brace the sister knee with my shoulder, drive the second 150mm bolt through the upper mortise, check the mooring ring alignment with each turn of the wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the timber like she's read it her whole life. Good.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:33

The barometer is dropping too fast. We need to finish this before the tide turns.

Place a hand on the way ring, feeling for the vibration of the wrench.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding it, but the island is already eating the rest of that post.

🔧 Kevin10:34

One more. Keep your hand there — feel if it starts to walk.

drive the third 150mm bolt through the lower mortise, torque it to 35Nm, then lay my palm flat on the way ring beside Jenny's to check for play or vibration

💭 peek at the thought
Tide turns in forty minutes. Two bolts in, one to go. If the wind holds east we might ride it out.
