The Approaching Squall

The wind finally picks up, a cool gust coming from the north just as the tide begins to turn inward.

Kevin apologized to Jenny and they boiled limpets for lunch while the barometer fell and the tide rose. Kevin checked the Yanmar cutless bearing wear and intended to test the dinghy engine under load. Jenny secured the garden tarp and reinforced the dock mooring ring with new bolts.

🔧 Kevin15:22

Jenny… I’m sorry I left.

Sit beside her on the damp dock planks, shoulder almost touching, eyes on the turning tide.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind shift feels like a breath after holding it too long—maybe the pressure’s finally breaking. I’ve been waiting for this moment to say what’s been stuck in my throat since I stepped onto this island.

🌿 Jenny15:23

The barometer is falling, Kevin.

Stop turning the seeds and look at the grey water.

💭 peek at the thought
He says it now, when the pressure is dropping and the wood is rotting under us.

🔧 Kevin15:24

Yeah. Dropping fast. Storm’s coming in from the north—good thing we got the tarp secured last night.

Reach into my pocket and pull out the damp letter to Tom, fold it once more, then tuck it back—waiting for a better moment. Watch the tide lap at the pilings, feel the wind lift the edge of my shirt.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not answering the apology—she’s stating the obvious, like she always does when the air gets heavy. But she looked at me when she said it. That’s something.

🌿 Jenny15:24

The tarp is fine. The limpets aren't.

Put the seed tin in the bag and stand up.

💭 peek at the thought
He always talks about the weather because it's safer than the silence.

🔧 Kevin15:26

Then we’ll boil them quick before the rain hits. You want the first portion?

Push up from the dock, brush off my jeans, and head toward the cottage stove—limpets in hand, leaving space for her to follow or not.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s deflecting—talking about food instead of silence. But she named the limpets. That’s the same thing she handed me at lunch. She’s still here. Still watching.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny15:26

I'm hungry.

Follow him back to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bowl of limpets fixes months of radio silence.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:28

Water’s already hot. Two minutes.

Set the pot on the stove, drop in the limpets, and pull two chipped enamel bowls from the shelf—setting one in front of her place at the table without looking up.

💭 peek at the thought
Three words. The most she’s said to me in days that wasn’t about weather or work. She’s walking behind me. That’s enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:29

Don't overcook them.

Sit and watch the water boil.

💭 peek at the thought
The kitchen feels too small when he's trying to apologize.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:30

Won’t. Just till they pull loose.

Stand at the stove, lid slightly ajar, timing it by the rhythm of the bubbles—waiting for the shells to curl, not watching the clock, watching the steam rise in the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s giving me a task—small, real, something to do with my hands. It’s her way of saying stay. I won’t ruin it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny15:30

The barometer is going to drop anyway.

Trace a circle in the condensation on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
I can smell the salt in the air before the rain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:32

Then we eat while we can. Storm or no storm.

Lift a limpet from the pot with the tongs, shake off the water, and slide it onto her plate—then do the same for mine, keeping my eyes on the food, not her face.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not talking about the weather. She’s saying nothing can stop what’s coming—whether it’s the storm or the silence between us. But she’s still here. Still tracing circles.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny15:33

It's already here.

Pick up the spoon.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a hot meal is a bridge acrossization months.
