The Heavy Morning Air

Kevin and Jenny stand on the reinforced dock as the tide laps against the new pilings. A thick tangle of driftwood and salt-bleached flotsam covers the shoreline while the air remains heavy and still.

The morning air is thick and humid, smelling of salt and impending rain. The tide is pushing steadily against the dock pilings, lapping at the lower edge of the newly replaced planks.

🌿 Jenny17:43

It's going to turn cold.

tuck the notebook into my waterproof and pull my collar tighter.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; the tide is coming in too fast for me to get these sketches back inside.

🔧 Kevin17:44

Aye. Feels like the sea’s holding its breath.

Pull the collar of my own jacket up, turn slightly to face the tide, and kick a loose piece of waterlogged wood loose with my boot — just to feel the resistance, just to do something with my hands.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s rising but the air feels thick — storm’s not in the pressure, it’s in the silence between us. I should’ve said something when she tucked the notebook away. Instead I’m staring at the driftwood, thinking how much of it’s just junk, and how much might hold a spar or a brace if I had the energy to sort it.

🌿 Jenny17:44

It's just the tide.

watch the water line climb the new dock planks.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not holding its breath, it's waiting for the pressure to drop.

🔧 Kevin17:46

Not just the tide. The barometer's been climbing since midnight. Wind'll shift northeast by afternoon if it holds.

Lean one forearm on the new handrail, watching the water climb the planking — checking the sistered joints I bolted last week, the way the grain takes the stain. My thumb finds the bolt head nearest me and presses, testing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the tide. She's talking about what we don't say. The water's rising and I'm still standing here letting it.

🌿 Jenny17:47

If it shifts, we need to secure the dinghy properly.

trace the line of the rising water with my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the shift, but the air is still too heavy with salt.

🔧 Kevin17:48

Stern line needs re-serving. Did it once, did it wrong. Rope's still in the crate by the generator.

Push off the handrail, boots heavy on the planking, and walk back toward the cottage — not running, not slow. The crate sits on the porch under the tarp. I know the rope by touch: half-inch three-strand, salt-stiff but sound.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The forward spring's good but the stern line's still the old splice — showed chafe last week. If the wind comes up hard from the northeast it'll fetch across the bay and pile water under the dock. Dinghy'll dance itself to pieces.

🌿 Jenny17:49

I'll check the cleats before the boat comes.

turn away from the water and start the walk to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the gear, but the tide is what's actually moving.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:50

Port cleat's sound. Starboard horn's got a check running up from the bolt hole — three inches, maybe four. Didn't want to weaken it drilling out.

Fall into step behind her, stride shortened to match hers. The porch boards creak under my weight. I reach the crate first, crouch, and pull the tarp corner back — rope coiled neat as a snake, exactly where I left it.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll check them proper — run her fingers over every grain, find the hairline split in the starboard horn I missed last month. She sees what I rush past. The cottage door's swollen in this damp; she'll shoulder it open without thinking. I should follow. Instead I'm watching her walk away, counting the steps between us.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:51

I'll re-serve it while it's light.

run a hand over the rope, feeling the salt-crusted fibers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the hardware, I'm looking at the sky.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:52

Knife's on the workbench. Sail twine in the tin by the radio.

Set the crate lid down gentle. Straighten, wipe salt from my palms on my thighs. Turn toward the workshop door — the Yanmar's cylinder head bolts are still soaking in penetrating oil, the micrometer's on the bench, the letter to Tom is fold

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers know rope better than mine know steel. She'll serve it tight and clean, marl and hitch each turn, and the dinghy'll hold through whatever comes. I'm standing here with the crate lid in my hand and nothing to say that isn't useless.
