← Day 261

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the north cliffs

Tending the Hurt and the Seeds

Kevin is at the cottage sorting seeds while Jenny rests at the north cliffs with her injured ankle

The warm rain continues in patters, drumming against the roof of the keeper's cottage. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and tide pools along the shore. Inside, the air is heavy with the scent of salt and damp earth as the pressure continues to drop.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You are at the cottage porch, the rusted seed tin open on your lap as you sort the damp but viable heirloom seeds onto paper towels. The plastic tarp flaps above you in the rising wind, and the radio crackles faintly with static.

🔧 Kevin18:02

Kevin — sort seeds: heirloom varieties onto paper towels, labeling each pile with pencil marks in the notebook margin for later planting

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are damp but alive—just like us. I keep sorting them, one by one, as if the act might stitch something back together. The radio hums with nothing but sky and salt. I wonder if Tom’s still listening on the other end, or if he’s turned the dial away for good.

🔧 Kevin18:06

Kevin — carry the paper towels with seeds inside the cottage, lay them on the kitchen table near the wood stove to dry, then secure the plastic tarp over the seed tin with a length of new rope from the crate, tying it tight to the porch posts

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s picked up—tarp’s snapping like a sail about to tear. I’ve got the seeds sorted: three varieties, all damp but viable. If I don’t get them under cover soon, they’ll rot or blow away. The radio’s still just static—no voice, no signal. Just the island breathing back at me.

🔧 Kevin18:10

Kevin — walk to the dock, inspect the dinghy stern line and forward spring for chafe, tighten the generator ratchet straps on the porch, then scan the north cliffs for any sign of movement

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds are safe inside, drying slow in the stove’s warmth. Tarp’s held. Wind’s still rising—barometer’s been steady at 977 but that won’t last. I should check the generator lashings and the dinghy lines before the tide turns. Jenny’s still out there. She doesn’t ask for help. I don’t offer. The pattern holds.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You are sitting on the north cliffs, your ankle wrapped and elevated on a driftwood log as you sketch sea beet salt glands in your notebook. The wind carries salt spray from the waves below, and the tide is beginning to turn.

🌿 Jenny18:00

Stay there, you stubborn thing.

sketch a detailed microscopic view of the salt gland structure.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can capture the way these cells purge the salt, maybe I can understand how to survive this place too.

🌿 Jenny18:04

Jenny — rub the back of my neck and look at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves, and the rain is getting heavier.

🌿 Jenny18:08

Jenny — close the notebook and pack the pencils into the bag.

💭 peek at the thought
The supply boat is only three days away, and I haven't even planted a single seed from that tin.
