The Heavy Morning Air

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch while the still, grey air hangs over the island. Jenny sorts the damp heirloom seeds on a paper towel while Kevin checks the tension on the radio mast bracing.

Kevin held the loose mooring ring steady against the rotting post while Jenny went to the tool shed. Jenny returned with the water test kit and successfully tested the soil pH levels in the garden beds.

The wind is holding, but if it shifts north, the soil in the garden will just turn to soup.

Jenny picks up a single heirloom seed from the towel, rubbing it between her thumb and forefinger before laying it back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wires again, and I'm looking at the life we haven't started.

North wind brings the chop too. Dinghy'll pound the dock if we don't double the spring lines.

finish checking the mast bracing tension, then walk to the dock to inspect the mooring ring and spring lines

💭 peek at the thought
Watching her handle that seed like it's made of glass. She's right about the north wind — seen it turn the garden to mud in six hours. The mast bracing's holding but the insulator repair's only good for fair weather.

🌿 Jenny20:44

I'll help you with the lines, but I need to check the pH in the beds first.

Jenny stands up, wipes her hands on her jeans, and follows him to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the chop, but he's talking about wood, not the seeds.

🔧 Kevin20:46

Alright. I'll hold the mooring ring steady while you grab the test kit from the shed. We'll do the beds after the lines.

walk to the dock with Jenny, position myself to hold the mooring ring steady in the mortise while she goes for the pH kit

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than yesterday — ankle's still bad. Good she's doing the pH check; keeps her off the crutches for a bit. Dock's where I need to be anyway.

🌿 Jenny20:46

Don't let it slip, the wood is soft there.

Jenny walks toward the tool shed, her boots crunching on the dry earth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing something mechanical while the actual world is rotting under his feet.

🔧 Kevin20:48

Won't.

brace one shoulder against the mooring ring post, fingers hooked under the ring itself, holding it dead still in the mortise while the tide laps the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
She knows every rotten spot in this dock. Told her the cedar shims split yesterday — she remembers.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:48

I'll be two minutes.

Jenny enters the shed, reaching for the water test kit and the pH strips.

💭 peek at the thought
way's holding the dock like he can stop the whole island from falling apart.

🔧 Kevin20:50

Kevin — hold the ring steady, feeling the mortise flex slightly under the pressure, counting seconds until she returns with the drill

💭 peek at the thought
Two minutes. The ring's dead weight against my shoulder — oak mortise, bronze ring, three cedar shims crushed to splinters. Tide's slack now but it'll turn in twenty minutes. Four 150mm through-bolts waiting in my pocket. Two driven, two to go. Drill's in the shed with her.
