The Storm Breaks

The rain is now lashing down against the roof while the wind howls through the ridge. You are together inside, listening to the garden wall being tested by the gale.

The air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and damp earth before the coming rain. The tide is far out, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the pools, while inside the cottage, the pressure continues its slow fall.

Wall's sound. Tarp's the worry.

walk to the porch door and pull it open a crack to check the garden

💭 peek at the thought
The wall's holding. Two courses of dry stone and the mortar we pointed last month. But if the wind shifts west, it'll hit the garden broadside and the tarp's only as good as its weakest stake.

Let me see the light, don't go out there.

Shift weight off the swollen ankle and wrap the fabric brace tighter around the splint.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that edge, the heirloom seeds are lost to the mud. I should have weighted the corners down myself, but my ankle is screaming too loud to follow him.

🔧 Kevin23:38

Fair enough.

step back inside and pull the door shut, then move to the window to watch the garden through the glass

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Nothing I can do out there now that the storm's on us. The stakes hold or they don't. Better to watch from here.

🌿 Jenny23:39

It's getting worse. Stay by the way.

Reach for the tin of heirloom seeds and hold it, feeling the weight of the potential life inside.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is catching the corner now. If that tarp rips, my grandmother's seeds will be halfway around the island by morning.
