The storm intensifies

Kevin sits back beside Jenny as the wind lurches against the roof. They wait out the peak, checking the barometer once more.

Kevin wraps Jenny's swollen ankle using fabric strips and driftwood splints to stabilize the joint. He writes a short note to Tom and leaves it by the radio for the upcoming supply boat's arrival.

Holding at 968. Still falling.

check the barometer on the wall

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's screaming now — proper storm force. Barometer's still dropping. Jenny's ankle needs checking but she won't ask. I'll wait until the gusts ease enough to move to the stove for light.

🌿 Jenny02:47

Check the tin on the high shelf. The humidity is too high.

Reach up to the kitchen shelf and pull the heirloom seed tin down, checking the muslin wraps for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If it drops further, the rain will seep through the roof again and I need to move the seeds higher up.

🔧 Kevin02:48

On it.

walk to the kitchen shelf and take down the heirloom seed tin, pop the lid, and check the muslin-wrapped packets for damp

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Pressure this low means air thick with moisture. The tin seal held last time but muslin breathes both ways. Need to check the packets before mold takes hold.

🌿 Jenny02:49

Lay them out on the stove. Not on the heat, just near the warmth.

Spread the damp seed packets out on a paper towel near the wood stove to dry.

💭 peek at the thought
They feel too heavy. If I don't dry them now, the mold will take my grandmother's legacy by morning.

🔧 Kevin02:50

Right.

lay the muslin-wrapped packets on a paper towel near the stove, spaced so air moves between them

💭 peek at the thought
Good call. Gentle heat'll pull moisture without cooking the embryos. Should've thought of it myself.

🌿 Jenny02:51

I need to sketch the sea beet morphology before the light fails completely to grey.

Sit at the kitchen table and open the notebook to a blank page.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is thick with the smell of wet stone. If these seeds rot, I have nothing left to plant this year.

🔧 Kevin02:52

I'll keep the fire fed.

add two splits of dry wood to the stove and adjust the damper for steady heat

💭 peek at the thought
Light's going fast. Storm's eating the day. She's been at those salt gland drawings for weeks — detail work needs eyes. Her ankle's throbbing, I can see it in how she holds her shoulders. Should say something. Won't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:53

Thanks.

Pick up the pencil and begin sketching the salt gland structure of the sea beet specimen.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are shaking a little. I need to focus on the lines of the leaves, not the thro in my leg.
