The crate yields to effort

The rain begins to taper into a drizzle as you stand on the porch, the crate still unopened.

The rain continues its steady drumming on the cottage roof as the water tank reaches its 400-litre capacity. The tide is rising, lapping at the dock pilings while the waterlogged crate on the porch sits swollen and stubborn from the soak.

🌿 Jenny06:57

The wood is too swollen. I'll need the saw or the chisel.

Walk back into the kitchen to grab the heavy chisel and the hammer.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get it open now, the humidity will just rot the seeds inside.

🔧 Kevin06:57

Take the hammer too. I'll hold the crate steady.

brace the waterlogged crate against the porch wall with my knee, positioning the crowbar tip under the nearest board edge for leverage once she's cut the nails

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Swollen wood won't give to a crowbar alone. Chisel the nail heads off, then the planks come free without smashing what's inside.

🌿 Jenny06:59

Just don't move it too much, the wood will split.

Pick up the chisel and hammer from the kitchen table and return to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to help, but I'm so tired of the resistance.

🔧 Kevin06:59

Easy does it. Start where the nail's proudest.

shift my weight to brace the crate with my hip and thigh, keeping my hands clear of the chisel path while Jenny positions the blade under the first nail head

💭 peek at the thought
She's careful. I'll keep my weight low and let the chisel do the work. Split wood means ruined provisions inside.

🌿 Jenny07:02

Hold it steady. I'm going to tap.

Place the own against the first nail head and strike it with the hammer.

💭 peek at the thought
If I split the wood, I'll lose the whole batch.

🔧 Kevin07:02

Kevin — lean harder into the brace, boots planted on the wet porch boards, eyes on the chisel tip to catch any slip

💭 peek at the thought
Good angle. Let the hammer do the work. Don't rush the blows.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:03

Come on, you stubborn thing.

Strike the chisel harder, trying to force the blade through the rusted nail.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not budging. The wood is like iron.

🔧 Kevin07:03

Work the sides. Wiggle it loose, don't drive it through.

adjust my grip, pressing the crate tighter against the wall with both hands splayed wide on the lid to kill any vibration from her strikes

💭 peek at the thought
The nail's not shearing — rust's fused it to the grain. She'll mushroom the chisel tip if she keeps hammering the same spot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:05

I'm trying.

Shift the chisel slightly to try and pry the nail out instead of driving it deeper.

💭 peek at the thought
If I break the wood, the seeds will be crushed anyway.

🔧 Kevin07:05

That's it. Slow pressure.

maintain the brace, shoulders squared, feeling the crate shift minutely as the nail yields under her chisel work

💭 peek at the thought
She's got it — lever, not hammer. One nail up, the rest will follow.
