The Calm Before the Surge

Kevin and Jenny meet at the ridge as the wind picks up from the south. The new crate sits alone on the dock below.

Kevin and Jenny met at the old shrine as the warm rain continued to fall. The atmospheric pressure is dropping steadily to 991 hPa, signaling a shift in the weather while the tide rises against the island shore.

🌿 Jenny07:52

It's coming in early, Kevin. We need to secure that crate before the tide turns.

wipe the dirt from my hands and look down at the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for this, and I still have the weight of that seed in my pocket.

🔧 Kevin07:52

Engine held. No vibration under load. Let's get the crate up before the water reaches the deck boards.

walk down the ridge path toward the dock, wiping hands on rag as I go

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted south and the tide's rising — that crate on the dock will be underwater or smashed against the pilings if we don't move it now. My hands are still greasy from the Yanmar test but the engine ran clean. Good. One less thing to worry about.

🌿 Jenny07:53

I'll grab the prybar. Watch your step, the rocks are slick.

start descending the ridge toward the dock, keeping the seed tin hidden in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
If we get the crate up, I can finally look at those seeds, but the soil is so sour.

🔧 Kevin07:54

I'll go first. Hand me the prybar when you catch up.

descend the ridge path ahead of Jenny, testing each foothold on the wet stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the seed tin in her pocket — the one marked 'E'. She hasn't said a word about it since the supply boat dropped it. The rocks are slick with rain and spray. I should take the lead on the steeper section.

🌿 Jenny07:55

Don't rush—the tide is rising faster than the radio report said.

follow him down the path, gripping the prybar and keeping the seed tin pressed against my hip.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out and if that crate floods before we move it, my grandmother's seeds are lost to salt.

🔧 Kevin07:56

Tide's up to the second piling. Let's move it to the windward side of the dock, above the high-tide line.

reach the dock, scan the crate's position, and grab a corner to lift while bracing against the rising water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the tide's moving quicker than expected. Water's already lapping the lower pilings. If we don't get that crate clear of the splash zone in the next ten minutes, it'll start floating and we'll lose whatever's inside. The seed tin against her hip — she's guarding it. I don't ask why.

🌿 Jenny07:57

On the windward side, right. I'll take the other end.

reach the dock and wedge the prybar under the edge of the crate to help lift.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt gets inside that, the rot will start immediately. I'm not ready to lose them.

🔧 Kevin07:58

Lift together on three. One, two, three — up.

heave the crate upward with Jenny, using legs and back to raise it clear of the dock surface

💭 peek at the thought
The crate's heavier than it looks — waterlogged, as the notebook says. Three times its dry weight. We need to get it clear of the zone where waves will hit it on the next swell. Jenny's got the prybar set; I'll lift from the far end.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny07:59

Easy now! Move it toward the dry bench by the garden wall.

shift my weight with the crate, stepping back toward the higher ground.

💭 peek at the thought
It's heavier than it looks. If we drop it, the wood will split right open.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:01

Slow steps. Don't let it get momentum.

shuffle backward with the crate, feet finding purchase on the slick planks, guiding it toward the raised bench by the garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
The crate shifts — wet wood groaning, salt crust flaking off. It's awkward, not just heavy. My boots slip on the algae-slick boards. The windward bench by the garden wall is twenty feet of uneven dock planking away. If we lose grip here, it slides back into the water.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:02

Just a bit further. Set it on the stone.

guide the crate onto the flat bench, my muscles aching from the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
Almost there. Once we get it on the bench, I can finally check the seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:03

It's up. Safe from the tide for now.

set the crate down gently on the stone bench, then straighten up, rolling my shoulders to ease the strain

💭 peek at the thought
The bench is solid — old dock timber raised on stone piers, above even spring tide. We've got it clear. The crate's sitting where it won't float or batter. Now we can see what's inside without rushing. My back's tight, but the immediate danger's past.
