Evening meal and letter
Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as darkness settles. The generator hums on the porch. A pot of boiled limpets steams on the wood stove. Kevin sits at the table with the letter to Tom, pen poised. Jenny eases into the chair opposite, fork-tine bent in her pocket, lime bag still unopened at her feet.
The rain continues its steady drumming on the cottage roof as the air grows cool and damp. The bent garden fork lies on the wooden table, a jagged silver arc under the dim lamplight, while the letter to Tom sits between them, a silent weight. The steam rises from the coffee mugs.
The fork bent on a rock. I cleared the first row, but I'm not going to plant yet.
Jenny reaches into her pocket and traces the jagged Edge of the bent metal tine.

Fork’ll straighten with a hammer and fire. Or we leave it bent—marks where we’ve been. You ate?
I slide the letter toward her, just enough to catch the lamplight on the envelope. Not touching it. Waiting.

I had the limpets. I'm not really hungry.
Jenny pulls the bent tine from her pocket and lays it on the table, measuring the angle with her eyes.

Letter's there if you want to read it. No pressure.
I push back from the table, get up, and fetch two mugs from the shelf. Pour the last of the coffee from the jar—dark, thick. Set one in front of her without asking. Sit back down.
