← Day 277

Apart — Kevin at the old shrine, Jenny at the garden

Midday work at shrine and garden

Kevin is at the old shrine having left the letter for Tom; Jenny is in the garden planting the first row of heirloom tomatoes.

Kevin was at the shrine inspecting the dock beam and successfully sistered the main beam with salvaged sound cores and stainless bolts, while Jenny went to the garden, examined the garden fork and attempted to repair the bent tines but failed.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the old shrine

You stand among the standing stones, the letter left in the tin marked 'E'. The trade wind is steady, the barometer still rising. The supply boat is due in seven days. You could head down to the dock to sister the main beam and torque the through-bolts, or test the Yanmar in the dinghy and chase the vibration above half throttle.

🔧 Kevin09:24

Kevin — walk down the ridge path toward the dock, checking the main beam's rot extent as I approach

💭 peek at the thought
The letter's done. One honest line, finally. The tin's rusted lid will keep it dry enough. Now the body wants work — dock beam first, then the Yanmar. The vibration won't sort itself.

🔧 Kevin09:28

Kevin — set up the heavy wrench and torque wrench, lay out the three sound cores and longer stainless through-bolts beside the main beam, assess the exact cut lines for the scarf joints

💭 peek at the thought
Reached the dock. The main beam's soft rot runs deeper than yesterday's probe showed — about halfway through the eight-by-eight, three feet either side of the midspan mortise. The three sound cores I salvaged last week are straight-grained Douglas fir, eighteen inches each. Good enough to sister port and starboard, but I'll need to scarf the ends for full bearing. Through-bolts are the longer stainless from the supply boat stores — 10mm x 150mm, four per side. Torque wrench is set to 35Nm. Epoxy tub's nearly empty; just residue left. Might need to mix a fresh batch for the sister faces.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You've planted the first row of heirloom tomatoes in the back patch, watered them in. The damaged fork lies beside the bed. Weeds remain in the rest of the patch. The seed trays show damping-off in pepper and lettuce cells. You could repair the fork tines, clear more weeds, or tend the seedlings.

🌿 Jenny09:23

Jenny — wipe the mud from my hands onto my thighs and walk back toward the cottage to get the garden fork.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too heavy, but the seeds are down now. If they rot, at least I know I tried to fight the island.

🌿 Jenny09:26

Jenny — pick up the garden fork from the grass and sit on the step, inspecting the bent metal.

💭 peek at the thought
The tines are a mess. I can't keep working the soil like this; it'll just tear the roots apart.
