The Morning Mortar
Kevin kneels by the base of the garden wall, mixing lime and cement in a bucket while the heavy air hangs still. Jenny stands nearby, adjusting the shade cloth over the tomato rows as the humidity presses down.
Kevin attempts to re-point the garden wall, but the high humidity prevents the epoxy-mortar from setting properly. Jenny spends the morning meticulously sketching the sea beet morphology and organizing the damp seed packets while the tide creeps in.
Wall's weeping less since the epoxy. Two more courses and the base course breathes right.
Mix another bucket — lime, cement, accelerator, water measured slow — and re-point the next metre of base course.

The eastern section needs attention—the mortar's pulling away from the stones.
walk to the eastern garden wall and examine the mortar joints where shadows collect.

Seen it. Salt eats the bond. Need epoxy in those joints, not lime.
Finish the metre I'm on, wipe the trowel clean, walk to the eastern section and probe the worst joint with the tip of the trowel to test depth.

It's deep here. We'll have to clear the loose grit out before we even think about sealing.
reach for the wire brush in my pocket to scrape away the salt and crumbling mortar from the joint.

Brush first. Then the shop vac hose on blow — gets the dust out the back. Epoxy needs clean stone.
Hand her the wire brush, pull the shop vac from the cottage porch, run the hose to the wall and blast the joint clean.

It's clearer now. I can see the actual face of the stone.
wipe the dust from the joint with a dry rag, feeling the texture of the rock.

Good stone. Mix the epoxy small — half cup batches. Humidity kicks it fast.
Squeeze epoxy resin and hardener into a disposable cup, stir slow with a stick, pack it deep into the joint with a putty knife, strike it flush.

I'll get the sea beet ready for breakfast. My stomach is growling.
walk back toward the cottage to gather the bunch of sea much and the boiled limpets.
