Evening walk to the shrine

Kevin and Jenny leave the cottage together as the light thins. The air is still thick, 30°C. They carry a water bottle and the shortwave radio. The ridge path climbs through woods, then opens onto the stone ring where the carved initials 'LB' face the sea.

Kevin and Jenny rest at the old shrine as the humidity hangs heavy and the tide begins its ascent. Jenny sketches tide pool succulents in her notebook while Kevin considers the state of the radio and the upcoming supply boat arrival.

🌿 Jenny23:06

Look at the lichen on the windward side. It's almost iridescent.

Reach out and lightly trace the curve of the 'L' with a fingertip.

💭 peek at the thought
The stone is so soft. It's like the island is slowly digesting whoever LB was.

🔧 Kevin23:07

LB. Always wondered if that was a name or a plea.

rest a hand on the warm stone beside her fingers, looking out toward the lighthouse

💭 peek at the thought
The stones hold heat even this late. My back's loosened some since lunch. She's quiet here — different quiet than the cottage.

🌿 Jenny23:09

The island doesn't care about names. It just stays.

Pull your hand back from the stone and wipe the grit on your jeans.

💭 peek at the thought
Probably both. Everything here is a plea for something that never comes.

🔧 Kevin23:09

Names are for who's left to say them.

watch her wipe her hand, then turn toward the cliff edge where the wind comes cleaner

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The island was here before the names and will be after. But names are for the living, not the stone.

🌿 Jenny23:11

Then we should be back before the light goes.

Adjust your grip on the notebook and look out at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm the only one saying anything right now, and even that feels heavy.

🔧 Kevin23:11

Radio check on the way down. 2182 first.

start back down the ridge path, boots finding the worn tracks between stones

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Dark comes fast this time of year and the ridge path has loose scree near the top. The radio's heavy in my pack.

🌿 Jenny23:13

I'll carry the notebook.

Follow him down the path, keeping an eye on the shifting clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The battery is at 60%, we can't waste the Signal.

🔧 Kevin23:13

Thanks.

pick a careful line down the scree section, one hand free for balance, the radio pack settling against my shoulders

💭 peek at the thought
My knees don't love the descent as much as they used to. She's taking the notebook without asking — fair enough, I've got the radio.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:17

Watch your step.

Step over a loose rock, keeping the notebook level.

💭 peek at the thought
My hand is still throbbing from those sketches. I need to sit.

🔧 Kevin23:17

I've got it.

test a flat stone before committing weight, knees bent, moving steady

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching my feet more than her own. The path's treacherous wet or dry — loose shale over bedrock, one wrong placement and you're sliding.
