The Storm Breaks Early

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof, the wind howls through the eaves.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny12:19

The storm is coming in too fast.

sit at the kitchen table, rubbing my wrapped ankle, and watch the rain blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to wash the lime away before it even sets. I'm so tired of fighting the dirt.

🔧 Kevin12:20

I'll secure the generator and check the dinghy lines. You stay off that ankle.

walk to the porch, grab the ratchet straps from the generator lashings, and tighten them down on the frame, then jog to the dock to verify the dinghy's bow and stern lines are snug against the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio insulator's still cracked, but the storm's moving faster than I expected. Jenny's ankle's wrapped tight—she's been favoring it since the north cliffs. I should check the generator lashings and the dinghy mooring before the wind shifts.

🌿 Jenny12:21

Just make sure the boat doesn't drift under the surge.

pull the seed tin from my bag and trace the rusted edge with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just the ankle, but the seeds are what matter. If the soil fails, the whole year is gone.

🔧 Kevin12:22

Bow line's spliced fresh. Stern's doubled. I'll check the chafe guard on the forward spring.

step onto the dock, crouch at the dinghy's bow, run fingers along the forward spring line where it passes the chock, feel for heat or wear, then haul the slack tight and cleat it off hard.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking of the seed tin—her grandmother's, marked E. She traced that edge yesterday at the shrine too. The dinghy's bow line took a chafe last week; I spliced it but the surge'll test it. Generator's lashed, radio mast braced. Just the dinghy and the porch door left.

🌿 Jenny12:23

Come back inside. The light is already turning grey.

lean back against the cool stone of the kitchen wall, watching the damp seep through my shirt.

💭 peek at the thought
If the surge takes the boat, I'm stuck here with music but a tin of seeds I'm afraid to use.

🔧 Kevin12:24

Done. Engine's off, hatch dogged. Radio's on standby.

walk back up the dock path, pull the porch door shut against the wind, latch it, and step into the kitchen warmth, wiping rain from my face with the back of one hand.

💭 peek at the thought
The spring line holds. Chafe guard's intact. Stern spring's good. Dinghy's as snug as it gets. Rain's hitting horizontal now—grey sheet across the water. She's right. Time to get in.

🌿 Jenny12:25

The stove is cold. Sit down.

open the seed tin and look at the dry, silent life waiting for a chance that might not come.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of the lines, but the soil is already turning to soup out there.

🔧 Kevin12:26

Wood's by the stove. I'll light it.

crouch at the wood stove, pull crumpled newspaper from the bundle by the hearth, stack kindling and a split log, strike a match, nurse the flame until it catches, then close the door and adjust the draft.

💭 peek at the thought
Stove's cold. She's right. The seed tin's open on the table—heirloom packets, some viable, some lost to mold. She's not eating. Neither am I. Fire first, then food. The wind's shaking the porch door.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:27

It's going to be a long night.

pull a chair out from the table and sit, the seed tin heavy in my lap.

💭 peek at the thought
The warmth is good, but it doesn't fix the hunger in my stomach.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:28

Hand me the tin. I'll split what's good.

reach across the table, take the seed tin from her lap, set it on the table, open it fully, and begin sorting the packets—viable heirloom seeds to one side, compromised to the other—while the stove warms the room.

💭 peek at the thought
The fire's starting—small flame licking the kindling. She's holding the seed tin like it's the only thing keeping her here. Storm's loud on the roof. Long night, yeah. But we've got dry wood, full tanks, and each other. Not much else to ask for.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny12:28

Careful with the heirloom ones. Some are damp.

rub the wrap on my ankle and watch the rain blur the kitchen glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient with his hands, but he doesn't see the weight of the seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:30

I'll spread them on the tray by the stove—low heat, just to wick the moisture.

take the small metal tray from beside the stove, open the damp heirloom packets one by one, pour the seeds onto the tray in a thin layer, and place it on the low ledge above the firebox where the warmth rises gently.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—some of the heirloom packets are damp at the corners, seeds clumping. We can't plant them now, but we can dry them by the stove. Not too close. Just enough air.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny12:30

Don't put them too close to the flame.

lean forward and watch the steam rise from the tray.

💭 peek at the thought
If they dry too fast, the embryos will die before they ever hit the dirt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:32

They're on the warming ledge, not the firebox. Just air.

adjust the stove draft a notch lower, then pull out the other chair and sit across from her, hands on the table, the storm hammering the roof overhead.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the steam curl up—tiny ghost of moisture leaving the seeds. The tray's on the low ledge, not the top. Warm air, not flame. They'll dry slow. That's the way.
