The Heavy Air

Kevin and Jenny stand by the raised garden wall as the humid air hangs still over the island. Jenny checks the tension of the shade cloth over the tomato rows while Kevin observes the barometer reading on the porch.

Kevin spent the morning attempting to carve the softwood scrap and test the Yanmar engine under load. Jenny focused on the garden, tending to the seedlings, though the heavy, still air made the work sluggish.

Shade cloth holding?

walk up to the porch and tap the barometer glass with a fingertip

💭 peek at the thought
She's working the cloth tension like she's tuning rigging — methodical, quiet. The barometer's held 1005 for hours. That stillness before a front. I should check the dinghy lines again before the supply boat's due.

For now. The wind hasn't turned yet.

wipe sweat from my brow with the back of a muddy hand and adjust the lime bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the sky while I'm looking at the dirt.

🔧 Kevin12:46

Peppers holding?

lean against the porch post, arms folded, eyes on the treeline where the wind would come from first

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the sky same as me. The lime beds are her metric — she trusts soil more than instruments. That mud on her hands is from the seed trays this morning. She hasn't mentioned the damping-off spread to the peppers.

They'll hold as long as the weight stays down.

pat down the soil around the last seedling with my fingers, checking for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If the storm comes early, these seeds are just buried trash.

🔧 Kevin12:48

Supply boat in three days. You want me to radio for extra lime?

pull a cigarette from the pack in my shirt pocket, don't light it, just roll it between thumb and forefinger

💭 peek at the thought
She's not answering about the peppers. She's answering about the cloth. Deflection — same as always when the garden's failing. The damping-off's taken three lettuce and two pepper cells now. She bagged them silent this morning. I saw the ash on the south beach.

🌿 Jenny12:49

No. The pH is where it needs to be.

stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle sharpens with the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
We have enough for the beds, if I just stop being so meticulous.
